Division of fractions property
The principle that states division by a fraction is equivalent to multiplication by the fraction reciprocal.

A property of multiplication that says for any number a, (-1) *a=(OPP)a or –a. The opposite of 6 is -6 The opposite of 4 is -4

Nested parentheses Nested parentheses are parentheses that are inside parentheses ((10+10) = 15+5) ((2*2)= 2+2)

Open sentence A number sentence which is neither true nor false because one or more variables holds the place of the missing number

Opposite of a number A number that is the same distance from 0 on the number line as a given but on the oppsite side of 0. OPP of A is –A OPP of –C is C

Order of operations Rules that tell what order to perform operations in arithmetic and algebra. The order of operations is parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.

Reciprocal Two number whose product is 1. For example, The reciprocal of 5 is 1/5 and the reciprocal of 3/5 is 5/3. reciprocals are also called multiplicative inverses. The reciprocal of 5 is 1/5 The reciprocal of 1/9 is 9

Relation symbol A symbol used to express a relationship between two quantities. > means “is more than” < means “ is less than”

Repeating decimals A decimal in which one digit or a group of digits is repeated without end. 0.33 is a repeating decimal 0.346 is a repeating decimal

Solution An answer to a math problem. 3+3=6. 6 is the solution 9*9= is the solution

Solution set The set of all solutions of an equation or inequality.
X5= is the solution. 5+n=20.20 is the solution.

Terminating decimals A decimal that ends.
0.30 is a terminating decimal 0.40 is a terminating decimal.

Trial and error method A method for finding the solution of an equation by trying several test numbers.

Variable A letter or other symbol that represents a number. A variable can represent one specific number or it can stand for many different numbers. D+E=F D=20 E=20 F=40 So D,E,and F are all variables
