2  Paper/pencil- take some time to answer the following… Name diseases that can be spread from person to person. What are some ways diseases are spread?

3  Vocabulary Chart  *add in the following vocab words to the chart:  Indirect contact  Direct contact Term/definition/ self explanation/ picture Take some time to go through the first three lessons (pg. 478-491). Read the definitions of all the highlighted terms. Write the definitions down on your vocab chart.

4  Match the pathogen with the disease. Bacteria VirusFungiProtozoa -Pink eye, cold, influenza, whooping cough, strep throat, mumps, chicken pox, mononucleosis, TB, polio, rabies, Lyme disease, athlete’s foot, malaria, ring worm.

5  Ask your neighbor what they think some of the body’s defenses are against infection. Then see if you can come up with some they didn’t name.  Tears, mucous membranes, saliva, skin and stomach acid.

6  Good healthy habits can keep your immune system healthy. Commit to these habits to keep your immune system in top condition! Follow a healthy eating plan Participate in regular physical education Learn to manage stress in healthy ways (discuss) Plenty of sleep Avoid tobacco and drugs Bathe and shower regularly Regular check ups

18  We are going to research communicable diseases and non- communicable diseases. You will be working on your own to find out information on the disease that you are assigned. Once you have researched and found the information, you are going to organize this information into a short PowerPoint presentation. Your PowerPoint should include the following:  The name of the disease- This should be the title of your PowerPoint. The definition of the disease should follow immediately after the title.  Whether the disease is communicable or non-communicable.  Symptoms of the disease  Diagnosis—how do doctors confirm that you have the disease?  Prevention—what can I do to not get this disease. For example, is there a vaccination? Can it be prevented by eating a healthy diet?  Treatment or cure for your disease  Any other interesting facts about your disease  Resources
