Students with Involved Families No matter what their family income or background may be, students with involved parents/caregivers are more likely to: Earn higher grades and test scores Pass their classes Attend school regularly Have better social skills Graduate and go on to postsecondary education Henderson, A., & Mapp, K. Academic Standards & Curriculum Standards : Statement that clearly define the expectations for what is to be learned by the end of the school year Curriculum : A detailed plan for teaching that includes many resources to help teachers teach and students learn (i.e., activities, lessons, units, assessments)

Parents’ Guide to Reading GradeTips for Families Kindergarten Read with your child everyday. Use picture books. 1 st Grade Pick a “word of the day” and play word games. 2 nd Grade Make your child write thank you letters. 3 rd Grade Encourage story writing. 4 th Grade Talk about the news together and look up unknown words or places. 5 th Grade Encourage your child to read aloud to family and friends. 6 th Grade Spark your child’s curiosity about the past by doing research together online or at a library and then writing a poem or story to reflect on it.

Parents’ Guide to Math Grade Tips for Families Kindergarten Ask your child questions that require counting up to 20. 1 st Grade Play the “I’m thinking of a number” game and other games that involve math. 2 nd Grade Look for “word problems” to solve in real life. 3 rd Grade Have your child draw different geometric shapes. 4 th Grade Involve your child whenever you do math, such as in recipes or when paying for your purchases. 5 th Grade Through activities like cooking, have your child compare fractional numbers. 6 th Grade Ask for help staying on budget at the grocery store without using a calculator.
