8 History

9 University History With its original building from 1875 still standing at the heart of the campus, IUP has a long tradition of academic excellence. The university was founded in 1875 as a Normal School with 225 students and became a State Teachers College in 1927. By 1959, the institution was the fifth largest institution of higher education in the state. The university changed its name again that year to Indiana State College. Indiana State College achieved university status in 1965, after which enrollment continued to grow rapidly. Current enrollment exceeds 13,000, with approximately 1,600 in graduate programs.

10 Department of Hospitality Management History  The Department of Hospitality Management at Indiana University of Pennsylvania traces its roots back to 1916 when a Household Arts and Science course in cooking was first offered at what was the Indiana Normal School. Founded in 1875, the Indiana Normal School began the tradition of providing “hands on” learing experiences for its students which still remains deeply embedded in our curriculum.

11 Department of Hospitality Management History Continued  In 1965, when the institution was granted university status, the expanded food production courses were organized under the Department of Institutional Management. The department name was changed to the Department of Food Service Management in 1971 to reflect the inclusion of commercial operations management into the program. The department continued to evolve and again was revised to the Department of Food and Nutrition in 1973. The name was once again changed in 1989 to its current name, The Department of Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management
