2 He is Risen on the Third Day “Christ is risen from the dead By death He conquered death And He granted life to those in the tombs” Hymn of the procession in Resurrection “We bring you the good news, what God promised to the fathers, this day He has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus” (Acts 13:32-33) Resurrection is the crowning truth of our faith in Christ, a faith believed and lived as the central truth by the first Christian community; handed on as fundamentally by tradition; established by the documents of the New Testament; and preached as an essential part of the paschal mystery along with the cross

3 He is Risen on the Third Day Why are resurrection together with the cross the cornerstone of the faith? The resurrection of Christ is the tangible proof of God’s existence, the truth of the revelations given to the fathers and the prophets in the OT, the sovereign power of God, the truth of Jesus’ identity as He proclaimed it, the foundation of the church, and the down payment of the fulfillment of the future promises to come. It is the summit of God’s work in history, as the sacrifice of Isaac was the summit of God’s dealing with Abraham.

4 He is Risen on the Third Day The Resurrection on the third day was prophesied about in many occasions in the Old Testament but not explicitly. Examples: The three day journey of Abraham to mount Muoriah, the three days of Jonah in the belly of the fish etc. “God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day” (Gen 1:5). The definition of day and night were made before establishing the days as 24 hours The common mistake made of thinking in the belly of the earth is describing the body of Christ, while in many occasions the Bible speaks of the “abode of the dead” where the souls sojourn, which is called Hades, as being in the belly of the earth. This applies to the soul of Christ, not to the body.

5 He is Risen on the Third Day So counting 3 days and 3 nights from the moment of His death as His soul goes down to Hades: He dies while it is still dark (1 st night), light from 3pm – 6pm on Friday (1 st day), night of 6pm – 6am Saturday (2 nd night), 6am – 6pm Saturday (2 nd day), 6pm – early Sunday morning (3 rd night), dawn of Sunday (3 rd day). First life was made on the 3 rd day of Creation: the life of plants that has seed as He called Himself the grain of wheat

6 He is Risen on the Third Day The historical and transcendent event: “I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the 12…” wrote St. Paul to the Corinthians in about AD 56. The resurrection is a real historical event that was handed down by the apostles

7 He is Risen on the Third Day The empty tomb is an essential sign for all to see, yet it’s not a direct proof of the resurrection. The absence of Christ’s body from the tomb could be explained otherwise The holy women, and then Peter together with the disciple “whom Jesus loved” affirmed that when they entered the empty tomb and discovered “the linen cloths lying there,” “he saw and believed.” This suggests that St John realized from the empty tomb’s condition that the absence of Jesus’ body could not have been of human doing and that Jesus had not simply returned to earthly life, as had been the case with Lazarus.

8 He is Risen on the Third Day The appearances of the Risen Christ: Mary Magdalene and the holy women who came to finish anointing the body of Jesus, which had been buried in haste because the Sabbath began on the evening of Good Friday, were the first to encounter the risen One. Thus the women were the first messengers of Christ’s resurrection for the apostles themselves The Risen Christ appears second to St Peter then to the rest of the apostles. The faith of the first community of believers is based on the witness of concrete men known to the Christians and, for the most part, still living among them. The 12 apostles are the primary “witnesses of His resurrection” but they are not the only ones. St Paul speaks clearly of more than 500 persons to whom Jesus appeared on a single occasion.

9 He is Risen on the Third Day Christ’s resurrection cannot be interpreted as something outside the physical order, and its impossible not to acknowledge it as an historical fact. The shock provoked by the Passion was so great that at least some of the disciples did not at once believe in the news of the resurrection. Far from showing us a community seized by a mystical exaltation, the gospels present us with disciples demoralized (“looking sad” Luke 24:17) and frightened. They had not believed the holy women returning from the tomb and had regarded their words as an “idle tale” (Luke 24:11). When Jesus reveals Himself to the 11 on Easter evening, “He upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw Him after He had risen” (Mark 16:14).

10 He is Risen on the Third Day Even when faced with the reality of the risen Jesus the disciples are still doubtful, so impossible did the thing seem: they thought they were seeing a ghost. “In their joy they were still disbelieving and still wondering” (Luke 24:38-41). Thomas will also experience the test of doubt and St Matthew relates that during the risen Lord’s last appearance in Galilee, “some doubted” (Matt 28:17). Therefore the hypothesis that the resurrection was produced by the apostles’ faith or gullibility would not hold up. On the contrary, their faith in the resurrection was born, under the action of divine grace, from their direct experience of the reality of the risen Jesus.

11 He is Risen on the Third Day The condition of the Christ-risen humanity: By means of touch and the sharing of a meal, the risen Christ establishes direct contact with His disciples. He showed them that He is not a ghost, and that His body is the same body that had been tortured and crucified, for it still bears the wounds of His Passion (Luke 24:30, 39-40, 41- 43, John 20:20, 27; 21:9, 13-15). Yet at the same time this authentic, real body possess the new properties of a glorious body: not limited by space and time but able to be present how and when He wills; for Christ’s humanity can no longer be confined to earth and belongs henceforth only to the Father’s divine realm (Matt 28:9, 16-17; Luke 24:15, 36; John 20:14, 17, 19, 26; 21:4). For this reason, too, the risen Christ enjoys the sovereign freedom of appearing as He wishes: in the guise of a gardener or in other forms familiar to His disciples: precisely to awaken their faith.

12 He is Risen on the Third Day The appearances of the risen Christ in a form that was not immediately recognized by the disciples could be seen as a step from their attachment to the person in the body, to the freedom of knowing Christ in the Spirit. 2 Cor 5:16: “Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thus no longer.” In this way the risen Christ prepared them to be led by the Holy Spirit (the other Helper, John 14:16).

13 He is Risen on the Third Day Christ’s resurrection is different than any other person’s resurrection. Jairus’ daughter, the young man of Nain, Lazarus, all were raised from the dead to come back to ordinary life by Jesus’ power. At some particular moment they would die again. Christ’s resurrection is essentially different. In His risen body He passes from the state of death to another life beyond time and space. At Jesus’ resurrection His body is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit: He shares a divine life in His glorious state. In a way, the resurrection of Christ is the final and the most perfect work of the Holy Spirit in our human nature.

14 He is Risen on the Third Day Only on the day of judgment will we fully understand the purpose of our eating and drinking Christ’s body and blood in the Eucharist, “given for remission of sins and eternal life for whoever partakes of Him” (St Basil liturgy), and John 6:40, 54, 62, 63.

15 He is Risen on the Third Day The Resurrection as transcendent event: No one was an eyewitness to Christ’s resurrection and no evangelist describes it. No one can say how it came about physically. Much more mystery it is in its essence, the resurrection as passing over to another life. But it is still the heart of the Christian faith. This is why the risen Christ does not reveal Himself to the world, but to His disciples (to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem who are now His witnesses to the people) Acts 13:31.

16 He is Risen on the Third Day The resurrection – a work of the Holy Trinity. The Father’s power “raised up” Christ His Son and by doing so perfectly introduced His Son’s humanity, including His body into the Trinity. Jesus is conclusively revealed as “Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by His resurrection from the dead” (Rom 1:3-4; Acts 2:24). St Paul insists on the manifestation of God’s power through the working of the Holy Spirit who gave life to Jesus’ dead humanity and called it to the glorious state of Lordship.

17 He is Risen on the Third Day As for the Son He effects His own resurrection by virtue of His divine power “I lay down My life, that I may take it again… I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again” (John 10:17,18). The church fathers contemplate the resurrection from the perspective of the divine Person of Christ who remained united to His soul and body, even when these were separated from each other by death: “By the unity of the divine nature, which remains present in each of the two components of man, these are reunited. For as death is produced by the separation of the human components, so resurrection is achieved by the union of the two.” St Gregory of Nyssa

18 According to the Scriptures The meaning and the saving significance of the resurrection: “If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain” (1 Cor 15:14). All truths of the faith were given the definitive proof by the resurrection of Christ. Christ’s resurrection is the fulfillment of the promises both of the Old Testament and of Jesus Himself The truth of Jesus’ divinity is confirmed by His resurrection

19 According to the Scriptures The risen Christ in His appearance to His disciples on many occasions “expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself” Luke 24:27, 45. Later the disciples had used some of these references of the Old Testament in their preaching of the resurrection. Example: “What God promised to the fathers this He has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus;” as also it is written in the 2 nd Psalm, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten You.’”

20 According to the Scriptures “who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification” (Romans 4:25). Resurrection brings about filial adoption so that men become Christ’s brethren, as Jesus Himself called His disciples after His resurrection, “go and tell My brethren” (Matt 28:10; John 20:17). We are brethren not by nature, but by the gift of grace because that adoptive filiation gains us a real share in the life of the only Son; this filiation was fully revealed in His resurrection. So we can say the life we live now we live for God in Christ and that we have the mind of Christ (Gal 2:20).

21 According to the Scriptures Christ’s resurrection and the risen Christ Himself is the principle and source of our future resurrection, “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep… for as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Cor 15:20-22). The risen Christ lives in the hearts of His faithful while they await the fulfillment of their own resurrection. In Christ, Christians “have tasted… the powers of the age to come” (Heb 6:5) and their lives are swept up by Christ into the heart of divine life, so that they may “live no longer for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised (2 Cor 5:15; Col 3:1-3).
