This presentation will guide you through creating your own family math game, including:  Choosing a topic  Developing playing cards  Designing the board  Creating game pieces  Writing the rules and instructions

Creating the Game WWhat will be the theme for your game? CChoose a topic based on your family’s interests. EExamples: Literature, Social Studies, Science, or Math. YYou may also theme your game based upon a familiar family game such as “Life”, “Sorry”, “Candy Land”, “Clue”, etc…

Research Your Topic  Once you have decided on your topic, you and your family will begin researching information about your topic.  The research will be used to formulate questions and word problems for your game cards.

Creating Your Game Cards  You will create at least 20 game cards.  Ten of these cards will be mathematical word problems related to your topic.  For example, your game topic is “Life”. You will write 10 mathematical word problems based on activities performed on a daily basis and the actual human body. The other 10 questions can be questions about your life, your family, and the human body.

Creating Your Playing Cards (Cont.)  The actual questions and word problems will be typed and placed on 3” by 2” cards.

Design Your Game Board  Once you have researched your topic and created the questions, design the game board.  Sketch several ideas on graph paper to determine the route you wish for the game to follow. Remember there should be at least 40 different blocks used including a start and a finish. Design a section of blocks for a card station and a section of blocks for the title.

Design Your Game Board (cont.)  Once you have completed a sketch of the board, draw the actual game board on the 20” by 20” graphic, poster board.  The sketch will be drawn to scale on the final graphic poster board.  The board will be provided by the teacher, and will be laminated upon completion.

Finishing Touches  Add color and creativity  Construct game pieces for at least 4 players  Each family member will use a block to represent themselves in a creative manner.  Design a symbol, use a word, draw a picture, or write his/her name in one area on the board.

Instructions and Rules  E E very game must have instructions and rules.  Beginning with the title, develop step by step instructions and rules for the game. The finished Instructions and Rules sheet will be typed and turned in with the finished project.
