Once, Always The doctrine of once saved, always saved, gives great comfort to many religious people today. Millions consider the only thing necessary for salvation is belief in Jesus. They further contend that if this belief is genuine you cannot be lost, no matter what happens in your life. Such an idea gives comfort to those who desire to have salvation without having to work too hard. We, as humans, seem to feel better when our fate is in the hands of an all powerful God and we cannot affect it in any way. Hebrews 2:1-4

Belief is Continual Scripture teaches that our salvation is dependent upon belief. If our genuine active belief continues we remain safely in God's care John 5:24

John 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. These are continual actions, not one time events, not past tense, but present. 1John 3:19-24

1John 3:19-24 …And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us. Believes, abides are again present tense not past. It is a continual action in the life of God's servant that keeps God in our life. Romans 11:22-23

Romans 11:22-23 Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. Belief must continue if we are to remain safe

Never Saved to Begin With
How often do we hear this argument to justify the "always saved" position? 2Peter 2:20-22

2Peter 2:20-22 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. What the true proverb says has happened to them: "The dog returns to its own vomit, and the sow, after washing herself, returns to wallow in the mire." Peter speaks of those who have "escaped" the world. He says some become "entangled again" with the world and are "overcome" This language points to one that is saved from the bondage of sin, thus necessarily a believer in Jesus. You cannot turn back to something that you have never left. If Peter were talking of those who had never believed he could not say they turned back, only that they remained. Hebrews 10:26-27

Hebrews 10:26-27 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. At one time these had a sacrifice for their sins, Jesus the Christ upon whom they believed

You Can Fall Many will claim that one cannot fall which, if true, would justify "always saved". 1Corinthians 9:25-27

1Corinthians 9:25-27 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. Notice who is in control 1Corinthians 10:12

1Corinthians 10:12 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. Galatians 5:4

Galatians 5:4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. Hebrews 6:4-6

Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt. Who is responsible for their condition? They are the ones that "crucify once again" the Savior! Hebrews 12:15

Hebrews 12:15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no "root of bitterness" springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; Context speaks of the disciplining of the children of God. Correcting those who turn back to the old ways. Hebrews 2:1

Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. Matthew 21:43

Matthew 21:43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. Those who have God's Promises can lose them

Secure In Christ There is a way to always remain saved, remain in Christ! John 10:25-30

John 10:25-30 Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not part of my flock. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one." There is no one that is able to remove us from Christ, if we desire to remain. Romans 8:35-39

Romans 8:35-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. None of the troubles of this world can take away your salvation, if you desire to remain saved! Nothing can separate you from God, if you desire to remain with Him

Only You!! Only you can remove yourself from God's care!!!
