Mars Unmanned Aerial Surveillance Aircraft
3
This is a model of a proposed Martian unmanned plane and was Built by Karl Tolley of the Denver Metro area, and Tolley Aircraft. Mr. Tolley is an Air Force retiree and a volunteer at Wings Over the Rockies. The plane is designed to operate in either autonomous or semi- autonomous modes of flight with limited flight profile duration within rarefied, non-terrestrial atmospheres. It uses a hybrid engine with a non-polluting exhaust, utilizing an efficient, ducted fan system for thrust and avionic electrical power generation. It has a unique and uncommon color scheme to visually identify aircraft in flight or post flight. Employment of extensive carbon fiber composites to reduce weight and provide for exceptional structural integrity. It provides a stable platform for broadband electromagnetic spectrum, gravimetric, and atmospheric surveillance for scientific research. Major airframe components are easily disassembled for storage and reassembled or repaired. It uses existing avionic components that are proven and off-the-shelf electronics. Its duplication of key avionics systems assures reliability.

Some questions to ponder with the visitors: Would this plane actually “fly” on Mars? Why? What is the need for aerial surveillance on Mars? Why would this plane operate on Mars in 1% of the atmosphere of the Earth? Would this plane work on the Moon? Will there be a need for such surveillance on the Moon?
