This formative assessment is a modified “True/False” quiz. It is made up of questions you and your peers made up based upon your sections of the project. If the statement is true, simply put a “T”. If the statement is false, correct the underlined portion to make it true. Example: The three types of fossil fuels are coal, oil, and petroleum. ANS: F; Natural gas

1.Burning coal releases CO 2 which leads to global warming. 2.Dead vegetation turns into coal over time because of high pressure and temperature. 3. When oil is piped into a boiler and burned, it converts its mechanical energy into thermal energy. 4. Coal combustion adds many greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, including CO 2, oxygen, and SO 2.

5. Petroleum forms from the fossilized remains of ancient macroorganisms which sank to the ocean floor and were buried. 6. Unlike other fossil fuels, oil may only take a few days to be created. 7. Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel produced in the US.. 8. There is only one way to extract energy from coal.

9. Tertiary extraction methods to remove petroleum from the Earth, include of the use of chemicals and heat. 10. The world’s top producer of oil is Madagascar. 11. The leading use of the oil refinement process is production of plastic. 12. Coal is a nonrenewable resource. 13. Most coal is used in the transportation industry.

14. Coal was first mined for industrial purposes in the US in the 20 th Century. 15. Extraction of oil affects the atmosphere by causing earthquakes due to hydraulic fracturing. 16. It takes a long time, high temperature, and high gravity to form oil. 17. Oil is the most used fossil fuel in the US.

18. Most of our oil refinement is put into gasoline. 19. In order to remain sustainable, it is imperative that we move away from relying on fossil fuels, which are nonrenewable. 20. Coal is the cleanest burning of all the fossil fuels.
