1 Extending DNS in combination with IP multicast to support ITS geo(broad)casting services G. Karagiannis (with input from Tiago Fioreze and Geert Heijenk)

2 Geo(broad)cast Geo(broad)cast is a location-aware service that enables messages to be sent to a set of nodes within specific areas defined by latitude and longitude coordinates Requirements: –IP addresses of entities must be associated with geographical coordinates: permanent (Road Side Units (RSU)) –IP multicast to disseminate information to the set of nodes within specific areas defined by latitude and longitude coordinates.

3 Problem and Possible IETF work How to provide geo(broad)casting in the Internet: –where the destination area is specified by the source (application) –where destination areas are not predefined –operating in a scalable way? DNS LOC records RFC1876: –used to record geographical information and IP address for an RSU, but forwarding DNS lookups can only be done by using the Internet RSU hostname to find IP address Possible IETF work: –Extend DNS to do lookups using predefined geographical coordinates of a road to find IP address –Specify how IP multicast can be used to disseminate information to the set of nodes within specific areas defined by geographical coordinates (combine with ETSI ITS geocast)
