1st incident: Verbal warning 2nd incident: Time-out/teacher intervention 3rd incident: Detention/parent contact 4th incident: Office referral

6 English Language Arts Our curriculum and instruction are aligned with the State Common Core State Standards (CCSS). E/LA standards are organized into 3 strands: Reading Writing Speaking & Listening

SpringBoard Pre-Advanced Placement Program (Play Video) Novels:The Outsiders and Tangerine Vocabulary Development (SAT Prep & SB Vocab) Independent Reading (SSR) Close Reading Strategies Information Literacy – More focus on nonfiction AVID reading strategies/aligned with English/LA Literature: fiction, nonfiction, poetry Reading Skills: Active Reading, Making Connections, Literary Elements, Main Idea, Inference, Cause and Effect, Prediction, Summary

Narrative, Expository, Argumentative, and Creative Writing Writing Process Writing Notebooks – Regular homework to develop fluency and stamina Grammar

Smarter-Balanced State Assessment (Formally known as MSP) – This assessment will be taken online after spring break Smarter-Balanced Preparation Chromebooks

11 HOMEWORK AbraVocabra: A new word list every other week with a packet of activities due on Monday with a test that Thursday. Grammar/Conventions: Mini Lessons taught in class with practice and sometimes homework. Independent Reading (15 minutes at school and at least minutes nightly – Total of at least 100 minutes a week at home) Writer’s Notebook: Regular writing assignments to be completed at home. Please check your student’s planner – we update it EVERY Tuesday in class. Work to be completed at home will have been introduced and discussed in class. Encourage students to contact another classmate if they have a question or need help.

12 Extra Help is Available
Library opens at 7:00 A.M. After-School Study Club (Begins Oct. 2) Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:50 – 3:50 PM Heatherwood Library Lunch Recess in my classroom - I will invite students in as needed or they may ask for help.

13 Standards-Based Grading
Formative = 30% of grade Summative = 70% of grade Student Progress Check online grading (LMS system) Reports sent home mid-semester (Nov. 14, 2013) 1st Semester – Sept. 3, 2013 to Jan. 23, 2014 2nd Semester – Jan. 27, 2014 to June 16, 2014

14 Unexcused Late Work Policy
Formative Assignments Work must be turned in on the day it is due Formative work turned in late will earn a reduced score After 5 days, it is too late to earn credit (NF) Summative Assignments Homework turned in late will still be eligible for full credit; however… Any work turned in later than one week from its original due date will receive no credit

15 Conferences Fall conferences are October 27 - 30
Evening conferences on Wednesday, October 29 All parents/guardians are invited to conference with their child’s Period 1 teacher
