HomeworkWrite contextual sentence examples of the 10 vocabulary words. Due Wed. Check your understanding response. Due Thursday Narrator’s voice paragraph response. Due Monday. Today you will need your journal, your planner, spiral/notebook paper the Spring Board text, pencil, and highlighter.

2 Vocabulary Words- in a spiral or on a loose sheet of paper in your binder under English tab. Ameliorate Detriment Impediment Indolent Invalidate Raze Reticent Retort Subversion Tractable Write out the part of speech, the definition, and then a contextual sentence for each word. Check off on Wednesday.

3 Grab a Spring Board book. Put your name on the side, and on the top of the book with a Sharpie. Once you have finished, have your journal out and open to a fresh page. Sit quietly and wait for next steps.

4 In your journal- create the following pages. First blank page: Unit 1 Assessment 1. – This is the page you will be unpacking the assessment and unit, which means you are identifying the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully complete the first assessment. Next page Unit 1 Assessment 1 Vocabulary The vocabulary page is where you will be writing and then defining words you’ll need to know for this unit. List the words you come across that you don’t know, as well as the words I identify for you.

5 In your journal… ● What do you picture when you hear the phrase “coming of age”? What explanation/definition immediately comes to mind? ● Record your response at the top of the vocabulary page in your journal.

6 Coming of Age Novel aka Bildungsroman Coming of age: the moral and/or psychological growth of a person. Bildungsroman: Class of novel derived from German literature that deals with the formative years of the main character, whose moral and psychological development is depicted. It typically ends on a positive note, with the protagonist's foolish mistakes and painful disappointments behind him/her and a life of usefulness ahead.

7 Personal Connection ●Under your definition, list some “Coming of Age” milestones you are looking forward to in the upcoming years, as well as some you may have already experienced.

8 Unit Goals ● To understand the concept o f coming to age. ● To identify diction, syntax, imagery, and tone- and to understand the way they work together to convey an author or speaker’s voice. ● To incorporate voice effectively into writing.

9 Unpacking Embedded Assessment 1 What are the two actions required? Your assignment is to interview a person who has had a coming of age experience. From that interview, you will write a narrative that effectively portrays the voice of the interviewee while revealing how the experience contributed to his or her coming of age.

10 The Scoring Guide (green handout) Underline the important words (verbs/action and nouns/things) in the EXEMPLARY column on the Scoring Guide (from the handout, not the scoring guide in your book).
