2 Social Studies Grade: First Unit: Community and Community Helpers

3 Objectives Students will identify different community helpers and understand why we need these people in our community. Students will recognize different parts of our community that play an important role.

4 Day One Materials Book- Police Cat Dry erase board Dry erase markers

5 Day One- Police Officer and Police Station
Whole Group Activities- Read the book Police Cat Discuss with students the job of a police officer As a class, create a list of things that police officers do Show students pictures of police officers, stations, and cars

Center Activities Writing-Have students write about what they would like best about being a police officer Reading-Have books available to students to read about police officers Art-Have students find clip art of police officers on the computer and add it to the class power point Computers-Computer presentation Police Officer

9 Day Two Materials Fire fighter “Bob” Writing Paper Book- Fire Fighters
Crayons Drawing Paper Pencils Firefighter books Pictures of Firefighters and Fire Trucks

10 Day Two- Firefighter Whole Group Activities
Read the book Fire Fighters Firefighter “Bob” will come in to visit our class. He will talk to the students about fire safety. Show the students pictures of fire fighters and fire trucks.

13 Day Two- Firefighter Center Activities
Writing-Students will write about what they learned from Firefighter Bob Reading-Students will read books about fire safety, fire fighters, and fire trucks Art-Students will illustrate a picture for a class book about fire fighters (they will give this book to Firefighter Bob). Computers- Interactive Firefighter

14 Day Three Materials Book- Out and About at the Post Office Shoe boxes
Pictures Pencils Paper Crayons Envelopes Glue Scissors Post Office Books

15 Day Three- Mail Carrier
Whole Group Activities Read the book Out and About at the Post Office Talk about what the students know about the post office and mail carriers. Show students pictures of mail carriers, mail trucks, and of the post office.

18 Day Three- Mail Carrier
Center Activities Writing-Students will write a letter to their parents about what they are learning this week. Reading-Students will read books about the post office and mail carriers. Art-Students will create their own mailboxes out of shoeboxes.

19 Day Four Materials Book- Lilly’s Big Day Paper Dry Erase Board
Dry Erase Markers Crayons Pencils Pictures and Website Books

20 Day Four- Teacher Whole Group Activities Read the book Lilly’s Big Day
Discuss what teachers do Write a list about what teachers do Show students pictures of our classroom, teachers, and our schools website.

23 Day Four- Teacher Center Activities
Writing-Students will write a letter to the teacher telling her what they like about school. Reading-Students will read books about school and teachers. Art- Students will work with a partner and draw a map of their classroom.

25 Day Five-Other Community Helpers

26 Day Five- Other Helpers
Center Activities Writing-Students will write about their favorite community helper Reading-Students can choose to read from any books about community helpers. Art- Students will draw a picture of their favorite community helper. This picture will be put in the class book.
