Respiratory System
2
Respiratory System Note guide page 556 – 559 Out with the bad air, in with the good Why do you need oxygen? To obtain energy from the food we eat Are breathing and respiration the same thing? Why? No, breathing is a gas exchange and respiration is the entire process What are the 2 parts of respiration? Breathing: inhaling and exhaling gases Cellular Respiration: the chemical reaction using oxygen and releasing energy and carbon dioxide
3
Respiratory System Note guide page 556 – 559 Breathing brought to you by your respiratory system: Nose: What is its job? Opening for gases to move in and out of the body Pharynx: What are the 2 tubes and what do they do? Esophagus: moves food from mouth to stomach Larynx: moves air from nose to lungs Larynx: Also goes by what name? Voice box How does this make sound? The air vibrates the stretched muscle creating sound (we call it a voice)
4
Respiratory System Note guide page 556 – 559 Breathing brought to you by your respiratory system: Trachea: Also called the? windpipe Its job is to? Provide a passageway for air to enter the lungs Bronchi: What does this do? Separates the air into each of the lungs Eventually this becomes thousands of smaller tubes called? bronchioles Lungs: What are the tiny sacs called here? alveoli The lungs are like sponges that soak up what? oxygen
5
Respiratory System Note guide page 556 – 559 How do you breathe? The lungs have no muscle so what allows the movement of air in and out? The diaphragm muscle moves downward to inhale and moves upward to exhale. What happens to the oxygen? Oxygen is taken out to the body by? We breathe in oxygen the lungs release it to the Red Blood cells and the cardiovascular system moves it out to the cells What is cellular respiration? Chemical reaction by which oxygen is used to release energy from food Carbon dioxide is moved out of the body by? The carbon dioxide is collected from the Blood cells moving from the body to the lungs where it is exhaled
6
Respiratory System Note guide page 556 – 559 Respiratory disorders: Describe the following: Asthma: Irritants cause mucus to clog the bronchioles (temporary but reoccurring) Bronchitis: An irritation of the bronchioles (disease or infection) Pneumonia: Bacteria or viruses grow inside bronchioles which fill with fluid and could suffocate the person Emphysema: Lung tissue is eroded away by smoking leaving the person with little material to absorb oxygen.

Bonus Point Questions Each question is worth 1 bonus point: Please answer them on the back of your quiz under the diagram. 1) What is the name of the Doctor that studies the Ears, Nose, and Throat (ENT)? 2) What is the name of the type of Science that studies the lungs and respiratory system?
