Text Types Miss Clark Communications 7

2 What are text types? Text types are different types of writing that serve a different purpose for the author and/ or reader. A purpose is the reason something is written.

3 Author’s Purpose An author’s purpose is the reason something is written 1) Narrative-to entertain 2) Expository- to inform/ teach 3) Technical- to accomplish a task 4)Persuasive- to make the reader believe in or do something

4 Narrative Narrative: tells a story Characters are introduced.
Plot- introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, conclusion Every narrative must have a problem or conflict. The readers learn the setting, or when and where the story takes place. Examples: Fairy Tales, Fables, Narrative Poetry, Mysteries, Plays, Etc.

5 Expository Expository Expository- exposes the reader to information
Expository texts are usually nonfiction. Dictionaries Text books Encyclopedias Newspapers Interviews Reports/ Essays Informational Brochures

6 Technical Technical- tells the reader “how to do” something
Usually written in sequence, or in a number of steps The steps need to be done in order for the correct outcome. Driving Directions Recipes Floor Plans Schedules Maps

7 Persuasive Persuasive- written to make the reader believe in or do something Political Campaign Literature Advertisements Commercials Speeches and Debates Book and Movie Critiques
