What are clauses? A clause is a group of words that have a subject and a verb. Independent Clause Can stand alone as a sentence Two or more independent clauses put together is called a compound sentence. You use the 3 ways to correct run-on sentences to put the compound sentence together. A phrase does not have a subject and a verb. (subject and a predicate) We will learn about the types of phrases next week!

Come up with your own Independent Clauses! On your paper create several pairs of independent clauses. Do not combine them! For example: My favorite snack is salsa and chips Chris loves to eat soft pretzels.

Make Compound Sentences Now combine your independent clauses to create compound sentences. Remember Combine using the three ways we discussed Only combine related clauses
