What is the definition of a sentence?
A sentence is a word group that contains a subject and a predicate, expresses a complete thought, and had an appropriate end punctuation mark.

Every sentence that is grammatically correct consists of two parts:
1. Subject predicate Example: Students at Weber High / are the best. Subject Predicate

Simple Subjects and Predicates consist of the essential noun in the subject and the essential verb in predicate. Example: Students at Weber High / are the best Jan did not eat breakfast this morning. In a few hours she will be starving. It is not good to go without eating. The brain can only think of one thing. It thinks of food.

Compound subjects and verbs have two or more and are joined by a conjunction.
Example: Our aunt and uncle/ visit us every year and bring us gifts. In the summer my friends and I race horses and enter county fairs. This year, we placed third in presentation and won a trophy. Jon and Bill won the race. I clapped and cheered for them.

Subjects in orders and directions have an understood you.
If addressing a person, their name is not the subject. Example: Do your homework (You) do your homework. Kim, get the broom to clean up the mess. (You) get…… Sally, text Billy to make sure we are going to the movie tonight. Wipe your feet before coming in from the rain. Don’t ever bring in all that dirt on your feet. Bill, make sure he wipes his feet next time.

In some questions the subject often follows the verb.
Example: Do you like raisins? Reworded---You do like raisins. Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable? What do you think? Can we find the answer in the dictionary? How long will you take to decide? Which vegetable do you like the best?

Subjects of a sentence are never there or here.
Example: (adverb) There is my green suitcase. Reworded---My green suitcase is there. (Expletive) There is no bridge across the river. Here comes Megan. There she is with no lunch money. Here are some suggestions for getting lunch. There is no excuse for forgetting your money. Here are your friends who will give you their lunch.

Subjects can be placed after the verb in order to receive greater emphasis.
Example: Beneath the ruined temple waited the deadly cobra. On top of the hill sits Weber High. Waiting for the football team was a huge cheering crowd. Off to their favorite class fled the happy students. At the head of the line is the teacher.

Practice: Write a paragraph about the picture using at least 15 sentences. Use a variety of sentence styles with the subject and verb placed in different orders.
