Hyperbole Hyperbole (hi-per-bo-lee) is a form of speech that could be described as “extravagant exaggeration”. It is not appropriate when writing essays or reports; effective way to ‘color’ the speech of a character in a short story, or use to make a point effectively in a humorous piece of writing.
6
Examples… The teacher was so boring that the desks were snoring. I’ve told you a million times not to exaggerate. “The Hippo” a poem –A head or tail – which does he lack? I think his forward’s coming back! He lives on carrots, leeks, and hay; He starts to yawn – it takes all day Some time I think I’ll live that way. Can you think of three yourself?
7
Proverbs Considered the shortest art form. Use devices associated with poetry – rhythm, rhyme, and metaphor. Provide vivid imagery to teach one a life’s lesson. Considered to be an important part of our oral traditions. Examples… Never wear two faces under one hat. A closed mouth catches no flies. Can you think of some you have heard?

“Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy’s Farm in Pine Island, Minnesota” By: James Wright Over my head, I see the bronze butterfly, Asleep on the black trunk, Blowing like a leaf in green shadow. Down the ravine behind the empty house, The cowbells follow one another Into the distances of the afternoon. To my right, In a field of sunlight between two pines, The droppings of last year’s horses Blaze up into the golden stones. I lean back, as the evening darkens and comes on. A chicken hawk floats over, looking for home. I have wasted my life.
