Pasteurella multocida
Gram-negative, non-motile Coccobacilli Aerobic and facultatively AnO2 A parasite of domestic and wild animals May infect man >> after dog bite Do not grow on MacConkey agar

Pathogenesis A local abscess at the site of dog or cat bite, with cellulitis, adenitis and osteomyelitis (sometimes) Meningitis following head injury Infection of the respiratory system >> penumonia, bronchitis etc…

Laboratory Diagnosis Specimen Culture Identification
Swabs from bite wounds CSF from cases of meningitis Secretions from suppurative respiratory tract infections Culture Blood agar Identification Cultural and Biochemical tests

Treatment Penicillin, Tetracycline, Erythromycin, TMP-SMZ
Osteomyelitis following dog or cat bite >> 8 weeks treatment
