Key Points ● Corrective surgery for scoliosis does not significantly change total, left, or right lung volume, and does not change the ratio of right to left lung volume. ● Hemithoracic symmetry improves after surgery, demonstrating the reestablishment of chest symmetry independent of the change in lung volumes. ● Previously reported improvement in pulmonary function tests after scoliosis surgery are likely not due to increased lung volume, but instead to the increased symmetry and function of the chest wall.

Preoperative and postoperative reconstructed CT-images of the lungs which allows calculation of left and right lung volumes. Note the improvement in the symmetry between the left and right lungs following surgical correction.
