Group #1: Trade and Transnational Corporation (pg. 317) Group #2: Transportation and the Movement of People (pg. 318) Group #3: The Media and Making Choices (pg. 319) Group #4: Communication Technologies (pg. 320) Remember to read all of the features on the page Record your conclusions on the chart paper provided, including a rating (1= highly negative; 10=highly positive) of the globalizing force

21 How does your assigned globalizing force affect the spread of human rights and democracy?
Possible Responses.... Trade and Transnational Corporation This globalizing force can be both a positive and negative force. Corporations are often interested mainly in profits, not human rights or democracy. Economic globalization often reduces basic services for people. Trade sanctions can help agencies working for human rights (ex. South Africa) but can also increase suffering (ex. Iraq). Transportation and the Movement of People Many people benefit from being able to move to countries that provide greater opportunity. Many immigrants are forced to flee and become refugees. Human trafficking is a major tragedy of globalization. Illegal immigrants can become victims of exploitation. The Media and Making Choices The media can be both a positive and negative force. It opens the worlds eyes to human rights abuses. It acts as a window on the world. Breaks down traditional values and contributes to cultural homogenization. Communication Technologies The internet can be both a powerful tool for gathering information and a source of misinformation. It can help fight human rights abuses, but information may not be accurate. Uneven distribution of access limits its effectiveness, yet provides ‘instant’ information to groups all around the world.
