2  Publishers attract readers with various textual, advertising and design elements on the front and back covers of books.  Publishers also include “brags.”  Brags are found on book covers, or on the first one or two pages of a book. Brags Information included on the cover or inside first pages that allows readers to make inferences and predictions about the novel. It helps the reader to decide if he or she wants to read the book.

3 Prediction A logical guess or assumption about something that has not yet happened or that is unknown. Inference A logical guess or conclusion based on observation, prior experience or on evidence from the text.

4  In your notebook, create and complete the following table based on your exploration of the book. Background List all the details Inferences and Predictions about the setting of the novel Character depicted Describe in detail Inferences and Predictions about the main character of the novel. Lettering Describe in detail Inferences and Predictions drawn from the words on the cover.

5  Read the back cover. Identify the things you find interesting, intriguing or confusing?  Why do you think the author chose the title Tangerine for this book?  Write a paragraph or two about the insights you have gained and what predictions you can make about the novel.

6 Book Description Though legally blind, Paul Fisher can see what others cannot. He can see that his parents' constant praise of his brother, Erik, the football star, is to cover up something that is terribly wrong. But no one listens to Paul--until his family moves to Tangerine. In this Florida town, weird is normal: Lightning strikes at the same time every day, a sinkhole swallows a local school, and Paul the geek finds himself adopted into the toughest group around: the soccer team at his middle school. Maybe this new start in Tangerine will help Paul finally see the truth about his past--and will give him the courage to face up to his terrifying older brother.
