inspection equipment Elcometer surface profile probes are fitted with a tungsten carbide user replaceable tip as standard, suitable for up to 20,000 readings. Probes have a measurement range of 0 - 500µm (0 – 20mils) and are accurate to ±5% or ±5μm (±0.2mil). Probe Range Elcometer 224 Separate Gauges and Probes are ideal for measuring in awkward or confined spaces.

inspection equipment Elcometer 224 Separate Probes are available with a standard cable or armoured, reinforced heavy duty cable. Probe Range The armoured cable is ideal for measuring in harsh environments and offers added protection against snagging and impact damage. Each probe is supplied with calibration test foils, probe protection cap and test certificate. Standard Probe Armoured Probe

inspection equipment Calibrating the Gauge Verifying the Gauge Calibration and Accuracy

inspection equipment Calibrating the gauge is the process of zeroing on a smooth glass “zero” tile. The new Elcometer 224 has on screen instructions to guide the user through the calibration process. Calibrating the Gauge After continued use, the surface of the glass “zero” tile will begin to wear. If a repeatable zero cannot be obtained the tile should be replaced.

inspection equipment If no zero tile is available, the “Factory Calibration” option can be used. This returns the gauge to the calibration set up during manufacture and test using reference probes but is not as accurate as a gauge calibration. Calibrating the Gauge

inspection equipment The calibration and accuracy of the gauge can be verified at any time using foils and a glass zero tile - without affecting any statistics or batch memory. Simply select “Test Calibration”, follow the on screen instructions and compare the reading value displayed with the glass “zero” or measured foil value. Verifying the Gauge Calibration & Accuracy After continued use, the surface of the glass “zero” tile will begin to wear. If a repeatable zero cannot be obtained the tile should be replaced.

inspection equipment The Elcometer 224 precision manufactured probe tip will wear over time from a sharp point to a flattened or rounded point. This reduces the accuracy of the gauge as the tip cannot reach the trough of the profile. Tip wear and gauge performance can also be assessed by using the “Test Calibration” function. Verifying the Gauge Calibration & Accuracy 

inspection equipment The Elcometer 224 probe tip is a consumable item with can be replaced by the user. A 2-point factory recalibration is required after a tip replacement to ensure the continued accuracy of the gauge. Probe Tip Replacement 

inspection equipment When using Testex® Tape, the replica tape measures the surface profile over a 70.89mm² area – the area of the memory foam. It measures the maximum peak-to-valley height within the test area. Counted Average Mode In order to establish the surface profile using an Elcometer 224, a number of readings over an area are required to generate an average profile. The average of the individual readings provides the user with the average peak-to-valley height over the measurement area.

inspection equipment The “Counted Average” feature on the new Elcometer 224 is a very useful technique for assessing an area of profile. To establish the average surface profile, between 5 and 10 readings should be taken within a 150 x 150mm (6 x 6”) area. The average of these individual spot measurements provides the user with the peak-to-valley height over the measurement area. The Counted Average mode allows the average of the spot readings to be recorded into memory automatically. Counted Average Mode

inspection equipment The new Elcometer 224 gauges have two “graph” functions: Live Reading (Trend) Graph The user can view a line trend graph of the last 20 measurements, which is updated automatically when each reading is taken. Graphs

inspection equipment The new Elcometer 224 gauges have two “graph” functions: Live Reading (Trend) Graph The user can view a line trend graph of the last 20 measurements, which is updated automatically when each reading is taken. Up to five horizontal axis are displayed representing different values / statistics as follows: - Highest reading in the batch - Lowest reading in the batch - Mean of readings in the batch - High limit for the batch - Low limit for the batch Graphs

inspection equipment The new Elcometer 224 gauges have two “graph” functions: Live Reading (Trend) Graph The user can view a line trend graph of the last 20 measurements, which is updated automatically when each reading is taken. The readings are displayed as white or red vertical bars: - White if a readings is within set limits (or no limits have been set) - Red if outside set limits Graphs

inspection equipment Why choose the Elcometer 224 ? How does it compare with other test methods ?

inspection equipment Two other methods commonly used for measuring surface profile are:  Surface Comparators;  Replica Tape & Micrometer Thickness Gauge Surface Profile Test Methods

inspection equipment Surface Profile Test Methods Surface Comparators Standard surface comparators are available as either grit, shot or sand and are used to compare freshly blasted profiles to pre-defined profiles. Whilst surface comparators provide a useful indication of surface profile, it is a subjective test. As they rely on visual comparison, the interpretation of the profile is dependent on the user.

inspection equipment Surface Profile Test Methods Replica Tape & Micrometer Thickness Gauge Replica Tape produces a numerical value for the profile and has the added advantage of providing a ‘proof of test’ as the tape can be included in manual reports (if stored correctly). The foam side of the tape is rubbed into the surface, providing a permanent mould of the peak-to-valley profile which can then be measured using a micrometer thickness gauge.

inspection equipment Surface Profile Test Methods The tape is available in four ranges for different profile ranges;  Coarse minus (C-) (not used in blast profiles)  Coarse (C) for 20-38μm (0.8-1.5mils) profiles  X-Coarse (XC) 64-115μm (2.5-4.5mils),  X-Coarse plus (XC+) for profiles between 115-127μm (4.5-5.0mils) Due to recent changes in the technical specification, in some cases, more than one test has to be undertaken with different grades of tape.

inspection equipment  If a measurement is made with Coarse grade tape which is greater than 38μm (1.5 mils), a second measurement must be taken at the same spot with the X-Coarse grade.  If BOTH readings are between 38-64μm (1.5–2.5mils), the average of the two measurements should be taken as the surface profile.  If the reading taken with the X-Coarse grade tape is between 38-64μm (1.5–2.5mils) then a second measurement must be taken with the Coarse grade at the same spot, and the average recorded as the surface profile.  Finally, if the measurement taken with the X-Coarse grade is above 64μm (2.5mils), then this single measurement should be recorded as the surface profile at this spot. In this case the measurement taken with the Coarse grade should be discarded. It is important to note that in this case, both tape grades must be in the inspector’s toolkit as simply taking one grade will not be sufficient to record an accurate profile measurement. Surface Profile Test Methods

inspection equipment Surface Profile Test Methods The measurement of the replica tape is taken with a a micrometer thickness gauge. Care should be taken to subtract the original thickness of the tape window from the total thickness of the tape and rubbed profile. Additional consideration should be taken when selecting an appropriate micrometer – not only to ensure the appropriate scale on the dial, but also the appropriate force and anvil area (hence pressure) is applied to the tape – avoiding crushing the replica.

inspection equipment Surface Profile Test Methods As can be seen, this apparently simple and fast test is fraught with potential errors to untrained inspectors. It is further complicated by the fact that earlier versions of the replica tape did not require the averaging procedure. For some inspectors, this information will have been overlooked. For those inspectors with stockpiles of old versions of tape, care should be made to ensure that the type of tape is clearly identified on the record worksheet.

inspection equipment Surface Profile Test Methods To accurately assess a surface profile, and obtain digital records for reporting purposes, the use of a digital surface profile gauge, such as the new Elcometer 224, is recommended.
