2 COURSE OBJECTIVES develop business communication skills in English (reading, writing, listening, speaking) within the following business topics: personal development corporate image supply chain managing conflict strategic marketing risk management

3 strengthen language accuracy: consolidating grammar structures at advanced levels develop academic skills: reading research papers, writing critical reviews advance presentation skills: presenting research papers develop cognitive skills develop interpersonal and management skills: teamwork activities

5 THE BUSINESS ADVANCED 8 units, 6 units covered in class each unit contains 6 modules 1) About business 2) Grammar → INTERACTIVE INPUT IN CLASS 3) Vocabulary 4) Management skills → TEAM WORK IN CLASS 5) Writing → HOME ASSIGNMENTS 6) Case study → TEAM WORK IN CLASS DVD-ROM (used for class purposes and autonomous work at home)

6 REQUIRED READING (2) research papers in the field of your professional /academic interest EFZG library American, British, Australian scientific journals

7 CLASS ORGANISATION contact teaching: Friday 8.30- 11.00 Interactive language input (90 min) Break (15 minutes) Team work (case studies, management skills practise, group discussions) (45 min) office hours: Thursday 15.00-16.00 A nalysis of critical reviews autonomous learning at home: material on DVD-ROM, backlog, written assignments, reading research papers

8 STUDENT OBLIGATIONS REGULAR ATTENDANCE (2) CLASS PARTICIPATION TAKING TWO PROGRESS TESTS ORAL EXAM PRESENTING A RESEARCH PAPER (DEADLINE) WRITING A CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE SELECTED RESEARCH PAPER (DEADLINE) TWO WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS (DEADLINE) DEADLINES WILL BE ANNOUNCED

9 REGULAR ATTENDANCE students who do not attend regularly will not be graded and will not receive the teacher’s signature at the end of the course CLASS PARTICIPATION individual initiative and contribution is rewarded team work on case studies/management skills sections includes completing a form which is handed in to the teacher after the activity the course and outcome of all team work activities in class are discussed in the oral exam

10 PROGRESS TEST reading comprehension, grammar, use of new vocabulary ORAL EXAM discussion of the course and outcome of team work activities in class discussion of topics from SB (accuracy, fluency, active use of new vocabulary)

11 PRESENTING A RESEARCH PAPER Two options: –In class 2 presentations (5 min each) every Friday –In our own mini conference

12 PRESENTING A RESEARCH PAPER input on presenting a research paper–1st session each Friday beginning on 25 Nov 2011 2 students (randomly picked)/ present the main points in 5 minutes (each) without using PPT to other students intro, body, conclusion signalling the main points engage other students in a critical discussion by asking relevant questions deadline for preparing the first two in-class presentations: 24 November 2011

13 PRESENTING THE RESEARCH PAPER IN A MINI CONFERENCE One mini conference in December 15+ presenters in 3 sessions 3 organizers / moderators 2 coffee breaks (cookies included) time to mingle and conduct small talk in English

14 WRITING A CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE SELECTED RESEARCH PAPER home assignment students write a critical review of the research paper input on critical review writing – 1st session critical reviews are discussed and graded in office hours, after presentations deadline for writing the review: a week after your presentation

15 TWO WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS home assignments students select two assignments from sections: 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5 or 6.5 in BUSINESS A. written assignments are only outcomes of preparatory activities in these sections assignments will be given a joint/average grade deadlines: the 1st assignment to be submitted by 16 Dec 2011 the 2nd assignment to be submitted by 13 Jan 2011

16 Overview of deadlines DEADLINES for all: 1st written assignment - 16 Dec 2011 2nd written assignment - 13 Jan 2011 Conference ( for students not presenting in class) – mid Dec INDIVIDUAL DEADLINES: Presentations: seven Fridays - 25 Nov to 20 Jan Critical reviews – one week after presenting

17 GRADING 2 progress tests - 50% Oral exam - 15% Written assignments - 15% ( average grade for 1 critical review, 2 written assignments ) Presentation - 10% Class participation - 10% TOTAL 91-100%= 5 80-90%=4 61-79%= 3 51-60%= 2
