Learning Outcomes..... 1.Order the main points in the history of the universe and how we came to be. 2.Show qualitatively the relative ages of Human life, the Earth and Universe. 3.Accurately demonstrate the skill of scaling.

The Time Line Demo Draw a 28cm long line into your book, (it will cross over two pages). Now use the following slides to fill in the main events in order and “to scale”. Write all calculations in your book to show you understand the method. Tip: Do all the calculations first and mark the point on your timeline with a dash. This way you will know how you need to space out the descriptions.

1,000,000,000 Years Ago… (1 Billion Years Ago) Multi-celled organisms evolve. Example: How to scale

1,000,000,000 Years Ago… (1 Billion Years Ago) Multi-celled organisms evolve. Example: How to scale

Present Day Big Bang Multi-celled organisms evolve (1 Billion Years Ago) 28cm 2cm I don’t want you to write the distances to each timeline point. I have just put the distances on this example to give you an idea of how long everything is.

Now here are the rest….

500,000,000 Years Ago… (500 Million Years Ago) Fish, insects and land plants begin to inhabit the oceans and continents.

400,000,000 Years Ago… (400 Million Years Ago) Sharks similar to those we see today are the oceans top-predator.

250,000,000 Years Ago… (250 Million Years Ago) 95% of the Earths species are wiped out in the biggest extinction event of all time: The Permian-Triassic.

200,000,000 Years Ago… (200 Million Years Ago) Dinosaurs such as Diplodocus and Stegosaurus began to roam the Earth.

65,000,000 Years Ago… (65 Million Years Ago) Just after the T-Rex appears, the dinosaurs become extinct – scientists aren’t 100% sure why.

4,000,000,000 Years Ago… (4 Billion Years Ago) Life begins as single celled organisms.

3,000,000,000 Years Ago… (3 Billion Years Ago) Photosynthesis begins and our planets atmosphere changes forever.

500,000 Years Ago… (500 Thousand Years Ago) Evolution of the earliest human beings – though a bit different to how we look today!

14,000,000,000 Years Ago… (14 Billion Years Ago) The Universe was created in the ‘Big Bang’ (7m)

4,100,000,000 Years Ago… (4.1 Billion Years Ago) The surface of the Earth solidified, and the atmosphere and oceans were formed. There is a lot of volcanic activity.

4,600,000,000 Years Ago… (4.6 Billion Years Ago) Earth formed – it was so hot it was molten liquid.

5,000,000,000 Years Ago.. (5 Billion Years Ago) Our Solar System was formed from a cloud of dust and gas.
