Starter What happens when you leave a glass bottle full of liquid in the freezer for too long? Why? It shatters!
2
By the end of today.. We will all know that rocks can be eroded by physical weathering We should know that there are 2 examples of physical weathering and be able to explain how they work
3
Freeze-thaw weathering
4
1. Water finds its way into small cracks in the rock. What will happen to the water if the temperature drops to 0 °C or below? How does freeze-thaw weathering happen?
5
2. At night-time, when the temperature drops to 0°C or below, the water in the crack freezes forming ice. The water expands as it freezes creating huge forces on the surrounding areas of the rock. These forces make the crack in the rock get bigger.
6
How does freeze-thaw weathering happen? At night-time this water freezes again. 3. During the day, when the temperature warms up again, the frozen water thaws. This cycle of freezing and thawing is repeated over and over again. The huge forces created cause more cracks to appear in the rock.
7
4. Finally a fragment of the rock breaks away completely. This process is called freeze-thaw weathering. Freeze-thaw weathering is a type of physical weathering. How does freeze-thaw weathering happen?
8
Freeze-Thaw Weathering Draw 3 labelled diagrams in your book that explain how freeze-thaw weathering happens Use page 94 of your textbook to help you
9
Homework Due in on Thursday Draw labelled pictures to show how onion skin weathering happens Use page 94 of your textbook to help you
10
Looking at onion skin weathering Take a piece of granite, tin lid and beaker of water. Heat the rock on the lid Then cool in the water – beware it will be hot!!! Use tongs
