2 University of North Carolina Wilmington Isaac Bear Early College High School A collaborative, partnership effort between the University of North Carolina Wilmington and the New Hanover County School System to facilitate the successful transition of motivated students to higher education.

3 University of North Carolina Wilmington A Driving Force: UNCW Strategic Plan: Goal III Embrace and enhance diversity throughout the university’s constituencies, culture, curriculum and outreach activities.  Objective 1: Build a pool of prospective students from underrepresented populations and recruit them to UNCW to develop a rich and vibrant learning environment.  Objective 3: Enhance diverse idea exchanges, engagement and the range of learning experiences through outreach relationships with other educational entities.

4 University of North Carolina Wilmington UNCW Strategic Plan: Goal V Strengthen the university’s regional engagement and outreach activities.  Objective 2: Provide service to and collaborate with our P-16 educational partners in public schools, community colleges and other universities.  Objective 5: Provide campus-initiated experiences that encourage participation in and access to higher education.

August 2008:Cohort III enters 9 th grade.

7 University of North Carolina Wilmington Transition to University Courses: Readiness Assessment and Planning A collaborative effort with participation by:  UNCW Administrators  UNCW Faculty and Advisors  School System Administrators  Isaac Bear Administrators, Teachers, and Counselor  Isaac Bear Parents (individual conferences with all)  Isaac Bear Students (individual conferences with all)

8 University of North Carolina Wilmington Transition to University Courses Approximately 75 students will take between 1 and 4 UNCW courses during their first college semester. Courses with highest enrollment:  Freshman Seminar (UNI 101)  College Reading and Writing (ENG 101)  Math (dependent upon UNCW placement exam)  Foreign Language (various) Additional enrollment in a variety of other Basic Studies courses based on readiness and interest.

9 University of North Carolina Wilmington Notable Collaborations University-Early College Mentoring Program  Over 100 early college students.  Over 50 UNCW student volunteers. Active partnerships – WSE, HAHS, Randall Library, ITSD (to name a few)  Valuable clinical experiences for UNCW students.  Library materials check-out and instructional sessions  Promoting digital literacy for all early college students.

10 University of North Carolina Wilmington Early Success First round of EOC scores ranked Isaac Bear 5 th in the state among all public high schools, with a 91.5% overall proficiency rating in English I, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and Biology.
