If you ask a man,what his favourite holiday is,you are certain to receive the answer «Christmas» or «New Year».And it`s true.These two holidays are most loved all over the world and the traditions of celebrating them date back into the past.Every country has its customs and beliefes,connected with these holidays. In Great Britain and in the USA they celebrate Christmas on the 25-th of December. The traditions in both countries have very much in common, because the USA inherited(унаследовали) the British Christmas,changing very little. As Christmas is a religious holiday, there are special Christmas Eve serveces. They usually begin just before midnight on Christmas Eve and are over early Christmas morning.

Christmas decorations. In Great Britain most families decorate their houses with brightly coloured paper or holly and they usually have a Christmas tree in the corner of front room, glittering (сверкающими) with coloured lights and decorations.In the USA the Christmas tree is decorated with tinsel,colored bulbs,lights and with tiny bits of white paper to look like snow.

Children special ritual. Children have a special Christmas ritual.Though British children are waiting for Father Christmas and Americans for Santa Claus,all of them hang up their stockings on their beds.Santa Claus together with Father Christmas come from the North Pole on a sledge drawn by 8 reindeer.They visit only good children.Landing on the roofs of the houses they go down the chimney and put the presents into the stockings.

Christmas dinner. Besides Christmas presents,cards,greetings and carols(куплеты),there is always the traditional Christmas dinner. In Great Britain people help themselves to turkey and Christmas pudding.In the USA, turkey is followed by pumpkin pie and plum pudding.
