3 Assumptions of the Service Learning Model Engages students in activities that help others and concurrently boosts student achievement Facilitates a closer bond among home, school, and community Promotes a sense of civic responsibility Prepares students to enter the workforce Promotes acceptance of cultural diversity

4 Four Key Components of the Service Learning Model Student involvement in preparation, planning and implementation Classroom content integration into the service project Reflection on the meaning of their community service Celebration and recognition of their participatory citizenship (building confidence)

5 Application to Health Lesson Teacher provides lesson Goal and Objective statements The Anticipatory Set involves students identifying a need within the school, neighborhood, or community; students provide project goal and objective statements Teacher provides Lesson Concept and Cues (lesson content)

6 Application to Health Lesson Teacher Modeling includes review of student roles and responsibilities for project planning and evaluation The Student Activity engages students in selecting and integrating curriculum content; creating project outcomes; identifying needed community liaison role for the teacher; and develop a project timeline The Evaluation incorporates reflection time for students (quality of group process; viability of content integration; degree of content understanding; service to community)
