2. तुम्हारी उम्र क्या है? How old are you? Go round the class asking each other how old you are, remember the answer is: मेरी उम्र बीस साल की है I am twenty (lit ‘my age is of 20 years’) Note down people’s ages. Can you find out the youngest and oldest person in the class? We will discover if you can figure it out.

3. मैं ऑस्ट्रेलिया में रहता हूँ I live in Australia वीना – मैं हिन्दी बोलती हूँ। Vina – I speak Hindi. पीटर - मैं अँग्रेज़ी बोलता हूँ। Peter – I speak English. verb stem (i.e. verb – ‘naa’ ending found in dictionary form + ता/ते/ती + हूँ/है/हो/हैं = ‘Present Imperfective’ actions done as habits or states

4. आप क्या बोलते हैं? What do you speak? Lets find out what languages we can speak. We will ask some of you to say a language you speak. For instance: मैं जर्मन बोलती हूँ I speak German.

5. मैं गणित पढ़ती हूँ I study maths Activity: try to write down a subject (विषय nm.) you are studying as above. You may need some of the following: गणित maths भूगोल geography विज्ञान science अर्थशास्त्र economics चिकित्सा medicine (or मेडिसिन)

6. तमु क्या करते हो? What do you do? Activity: as a class make up statements to go with twelve pictures for instance: मैं रोज़ ला ट्रोब आता हूँ। I come to La Trobe daily. आना- एनयूएस PS रोज़ adv. daily, & nm. day

7. रेडियो - सुननाटीवी - देखनाकाम - करनाचिट्ठी - लिखना अख़बार - पढ़नाकेले - खानासिनेमा - जानाचाय - पीना पियानो बजानादवाई - लेनापैसा – देनाफुटबॉल खेलना

8. हम हिन्दी बोलते हैं We speak Hindi When more than one person is doing an action then if there is a male involved the verb is masculine plural. ट्रक और कार जाती हैं Truck and car go. If the doers of the action are things then it agrees with the thing nearest to the verb. Activity: describe what is happening in the following pictures.

10. मैं कारख़ाने में काम नहीं करता I don’t work in a factory नहीं before the verb means don’t, the final हूँ है हैं हो etc. is optional.

11. आप क्या देखते हैं? What do you watch? In small groups interview each other about what you do and don’t watch आप क्या देखते हैं? What do you watch? मैं एनसीआईएस देखता हूँ I watch NCIS. etc. then get one of you to be a spokesman and tell the class what you watch.

12. आप कहाँ रहते हैं? मैं फ़र्नी क्रीक में रहता हूँ। Where do you live? I live in Ferny Creek. रहना = to live, as in ‘live in a place’ despite being spelled rah- the verb here sounds like reh- (ह when not followed by a long vowel sounds ‘eh’) also note the difference in spelling मैं ‘I’ में ‘in’

13. सोना महँगा होता है Gold is expensive Statements of lasting validity An extra होना before the final verb, in the forms होता होते होती turns a normal indicative statement into a statement about a lasting truth. दो और दो चार होते हैं। 2 and 2 are four. Activity: Describe a quality for each of the things in the following pictures Some may need हर समय (at) all times

14. महँगाठंडा (आइसबर्ग nm.) सुंदर अच्छागरम (आग nf.) मीठा

15. कितना है? How many? Lets do some maths! दो और दो चार होते हैं। 2 and 2 are four. Would be easy… We will tell you ask some more

16. तो so… तो can used in several ways beginning a statement, tends to mean so after most words (mostly not verbs) for emphasis begins a clause in when… then.. and if… then… statements (these are studied later)

17. आप क्या (काम) करते हैं ? What (work) do you do? by title मैं दुकानदार हूँ। I am a shopkeeper. by location मैं दफ़्तर में काम करती हूँ। I work in an office. by occupation मैं टैक्सी चलाता हूँ। I drive a taxi.

18. मेरे पिताजी दफ़्तर में काम करते हैं Activity: Occupations Then each try and write down what your parents/siblings do. Then divide into groups and interview each other about what our parents do. Then appoint a spokesman to describe what the families of the group do.
