5 Terminology ESL – English as a Second Language ELL – English Language Learners (students) ELD – English Language Development (class) Exited/ Promoted – advanced and proficient level students; not required to receive services any more Monitored – have been exited within past 2 years; under close watch; can be reinstated LEP – limited English proficiency ELP – English language proficiency

6 Who is Eligible ? Language other than English is spoken at home. Student is assessed for English language proficiency and is at an Emergent, Beginner, Intermediate, or Early Advanced level. Parents have given their permission for the services.

7 Proficiency Assessment Students new to PPS get assessed at Family Support Centers for Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Basic Math skills. ELPA (English Language Proficiency Assessment) is administered once a year in spring to all ELLs. Letters of Notification of ESL Services and proficiency levels are mailed to students’ homes each fall.

8 Students eligible for ESL services receive: One ELD Period a day – English language instruction from an ESL Teacher during a regular class period. Students are grouped by proficiency levels Sheltered Instruction – a content class where English is used for providing content area (Language Arts, Social Studies, Science) instruction. Teachers use a variety of techniques to make content accessible to all learners.

9 Monitoring Exited Students Students who have been exited from the ESL Program in over the past 2 years are closely observed by their teachers to determine if these students are making an adequate progress in mainstream classrooms. Parents of recently exited or promoted students receive letters from ESL Department to inform them of their child’s progress Additional support services are available

10 Additional ESL Support Services SUN School provides Homework Club support and Tutoring. Parent Liaison and Educational Assistant, Mrs. Mayoral, is available to translate for Spanish speakers and help all students. Many teachers at George are bilingual. Some speak Spanish, Russian, and French.
