Proportion of credit and non-credit students Approx. 60% of IWLP students are studying for academic credit At some intuitions for-credit study is not an option At some institutions not-for-credit study is not an option In most institutions (67% of sample), both credit and non- credit provision is offered. Where both types of provision are offered, in 60% of HEIs students follow the same courses. 13

Context of Languages for All at Cardiff University Macro level: new fee regime; increased competition between HEIs; shrinking of pool of applicants in Languages; raising awareness of politicians of social and economic role of Languages. Micro level: new Vice-Chancellor; new governance structure; lack of strong identity; fragmented Modern Language provision. HE International Unit 29 April 2015

New University strategy 2012-17 in key areas of Education and Students; Research, Innovation and Enterprise; International; Engagement; Widening Access. Review of Modern Languages (in 2012/13): Creation of a new School of Modern Languages (Oct. 2013). Creation of university-wide language programme free for all students and in addition to their degree studies (Languages for All) (Oct. 2013). Global Opportunity Centre (June 2014): To develop, support and promote opportunities for undergraduate students to benefit from international experience during their time at Cardiff University (four weeks studying, researching or volunteering) HE International Unit 29 April 2015

International Mobility -By 2017, 17% of undergraduates should have spent four weeks outside the UK. -Presently, 12% undertake placements abroad. -Mainly in two Schools: Modern Languages & Medicine. -Recognition of mobility: -Achievement record, diploma; -University transcript; -Global Employability Award. Size and Shape of Languages for All at Cardiff University Objectives: support international outward mobility of our students; offer different levels of intensity to match students learning styles, availability and goals; be responsive to demand from Schools and students; teach in an innovative way with a strong emphasis on communication. Main performance indicators: Overall Student Satisfaction. Student Retention. Processes: Sponsored by a Senior Member of Staff. Fully integrated in the Student Information Management System (SIMS). Taught Languages for All programme, in numbers: -Semester 1: 800 students -Semester 2: 1451 students -Intensives (January): 211 students -Total: 2462 enrolments of which 74% completed their course. HE International Unit 29 April 2015

Distribution of Languages across Languages for All Taught Programmes - 2014/15 -Six languages – most popular ones in the UK. -Weekly courses during semester time: -Two hours per week for European languages. -Three hours per week for non- European languages. -Intensive courses: -Open to all, in January & June, for Beginners. -Tailored to Schools, as and when required.
