3 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 3 Aim To develop children’s oral and written communication skills through the use of songs Theme: Animals Song:Old MacDonald Materials: Tape recorder Pictures of animals Sound of each animal written on large cards

4 Objectives Students should be able to: Listen to the song and repeat the name of animals Identify a picture of the animal Associate the animal with the sound it produces. Identify the name of the animal in the written form Recreate the whole song through visuals as the song is played. Write the names of the animals Low ability Average ability Higher ability

5 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 5 Procedures Stage 1: Modelling by teacher Background: Song: Old MacDonald Teacher presents a picture to accompany the name of the animal Teacher repeats the names of animals and sound they make as the song is played

6 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 6 Stage 2 Teacher invites children to repeat along with him Teacher invites a child to take over Child assumes the role of the teacher as the song is played

7 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 7 Stage 3 Invite children to draw any one of the animals and to write the name and sound below. The following is displayed Name of animal Sound it makes:

8 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 8 Stage 4 Play the song again and invite students to display their pictures as they listen to the song. Ask pupils to draw and write individually in their copybook.

9 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 9 Stage 5 Make children sing the song and point out to the pictures, names or sounds at random without the support of the cassette recorder.

10 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 10 Lesson 2: Identification of words Outcome statement Pupils: Demonstrate understanding that written symbols and illustrations convey information. Engage in reading–like behaviour Recognise some familiar elements and content in texts.

11 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 11 Aim To encourage pupils to engage in written work with the words of the song as support Objectives: Pupils are able to Write words that they have listened to in the song List 3 letter/ 4 letter/ 5 letter words

12 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 12 Procedures Encourage pupils to take risks by writing on their own Teacher corrects Teacher provides correct spelling Pupils rewrite all the words Use a chart (see next slide)- this chart can be copied by the pupils as evidence of work in their copybook.

16 MIE- Education Studies Department-ONV 16 Invite pupils to rewrite the words identified on the following chart to be displayed in class.
