GENOCIDE Genocide is… defined as the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it (George Santayana)"

DARFUR GENOCIDE Some people in Darfur identify as african, the others identify as Arab Government favors the Arabs Government neglect left the people in Sudan left them poor and voiceless February 2003: Non-Arab groups in Darfur launched an uprising against the government The government response was to implement their campaign of genocide

JANJAWEED Janjaweed are a government supported militia recruited from local Arab tribes The government was being constantly being beat by the non-Arab rebels, so they began to fund the janjaweed The janjaweed quickly took the upper hand on the rebels They use:Mass murder displacementRape

FACTS It is 70% more frequent to hear racial slurs when the Janjaweed attack rather than the police force It is 85% more likely for displacement when the Janjaweed attack rather than the police force When food and water were attacked it was 129% more likely for displacement than killings and house burnings

WORLD RESPONSE Other countries have talked about the issue but not enough has been done yet to stop the issue Compromises by the UN have been denied in Sudan The violence has spread to the neighboring chad

PALESTINIAN GENOCIDE Zionist Jews were exterminating the Palestinians in Israel The Zionists believe that Israel is their holy land and they have a biblical right to it Started in 1948 during the Palestinian Exodus

ZIONISM Zionism is a form of nationalism of Jews and Jewish culture Zionists believe that they have a right to “The Holy Land” Zionism was formally established in 1897 by Theodor Herzl The Zionist movement established Israel as the homeland for jewish people in 1948

WORLD RESPONSE Refugees are still a key issue in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict today Many of the original refugees’ next generation are still refugees Palestinians are still being oppressed by the Israelis today The issue is trying to be worked out but not much progress has been made

BACKGROUND ON THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE Meds Yeghern …Great Calamity Armenians are a group of Christians living in the Ottoman empire specifically Turkey First modern genocide April 24, 1915 Genocide was carried out by the rulers of the Ottoman Empire during World War 1

THE DEATH OF THE ARMENIANS Between one- half and two-thirds of the Armenians in the Ottoman empire were killed About 1 to 1.5 million were killed Armenians went through massacres and forced deportations by Ottoman army Armenians were raped killed by morphine overdose, toxic gas, death marches, and typhoid inoculation

OTTOMANS PURPOSE There was no such motive present in the Arminian genocide Some believe for political power Some believe it was the Ottomans way to rid the Christians from their land

WORLD RESPONSE This was known as the first modern Genocide Because of this event the word genocide was created in order to describe the event The united convention on the prevention and Punishment of the Crime was created only after the Jewish genocide The Committee of Union and Progress was blamed for the war and for the destruction of the Armenian community

WORLD RESPONSE CONTINUED The events were recorded in articles regularly around the world Many Americans spoke out about it including former president Theodore Roosevelt, rabbi Stephen Wise, William Jennings Bryan, and Alice Stone Blackwell. Children were reminded to clean their plate as a reminder of the starving Armenians

CAMBODIAN GENOCIDE BACKGROUND Known as the Khmer Rouge period 1975-1979 Communist party in Cambodia with the leaders Pol Pot, Nuon Chea, Leng Sary, Son Sen, Lhieu Samphan This group targeted former government officials, professionals and intellectuals, people of religion, and minorities

BACKGROUND CONTINUED The Cham a Muslim minority group force to adopted the Khmer ways Cambodians of Chinese descent were the one who were hit hard in this event.

KHMER ROUGE This group killed two million people through execution, forced labor, and starvation They are know for their torture which they would torture a victim until they confess to any thing.

WORLDS RESPONSE UN led a peace keeping mission to stop violence and to establish a democratic government The Genocide only stopped when that Vietnamese invade and controlled Cambodia for over a decade
