Preparing for a Career Good foundation skills ▫Basic skills: reading, writing, math, speaking, and listening abilities ▫Thinking skills: creative thinking, making decisions, solving problems, visualizing ideas, knowing how to learn, and reasoning

Preparing for a Career Career/Technical Training ▫Usually provide training for entry-level employment ▫Focus on health, business, agriculture, skilled trades, and marketing areas ▫Tech-prep programs are available in some high schools (two years in high school/two after); often offer dual credit to high school students

Preparing for a Career Cooperative Education ▫G▫Gain work experience while in school ▫E▫Earn money for your work ▫S▫Similar to our work experience class Apprenticeships ▫L▫Learn a trade by working under the guidance of a skilled worker ▫E▫Examples include: automotive mechanic, carpentry, commercial foods, photography, etc.

Company training programs Community and Junior colleges offer associate degrees Colleges and universities offer bachelor’s degrees ▫M▫Major ▫G▫Graduate degree ▫M▫Master’s degree ▫D▫Doctoral degree Internships—unpaid period when a college student or graduate gains practical experience under supervision Military training ▫Many duties are the same as those done by civilian worker ▫Can train for mechanic, chef, or electronics technician ▫Often pay for college degree programs

Financing Further Training Research to know how much money you will need for education costs Plan ahead by saving for your education Work while going to school to help cover costs Local colleges are less expensive and you can live at home Fill out the FAFSA online Consider borrowing money ▫The government provides low-interest loans that will not be repaid until you graduate from college Join the military and arrange to have all or part of your education costs paid Apply for scholarships for which you might qualify
