4. What is Australia? Australia is a country, an island and a continent all at the same time. It is the sixth largest country and the smallest continent in the world. It is located in the southern hemisphere, south of Asia. It is the world’s driest continent.

5. First Europeans in Australia Captain Cook discovered Australia in 1770. First Europeans appeared in Australia in 1788. Of 1000 people arrived here 750 were convicts.

6. Australian natives Aborigines came to Australia over 40,000 years ago. They are good hunters. Aborigine means first inhabitant. They represent about 1.5 per cent of the population.

11. Australia’s animals Australia’s best-known animals are the kangaroo, the koala and the dingo. There are 50 species of kangaroo. About 400 species of birds live in Australia, 55 species of parrots. The emu is the most interesting bird. It is big and can’t fly.
