United Way Board for the Future; Competencies for working toward a world of economic and social opportunity for all STRATEGIC THINKER The United Way Board provides thought-leadership and expertise in developing a path to achieve the strategic goals of the organization. ATTRIBUTES Sees the big picture, envisions and champions activities that lead to significant achievement for the organization and community Ensures a healthy exchange of ideas inclusive of diverse perspectives Is well–informed about economic, human, and community dynamics Protects against mission-drift Is a practitioner of a good governance Embraces change and innovation; rewards entrepreneurial efforts CONNECTS LEADERS TO LEADERS The United Way Board values talent as a key to success and attracts and develops key leaders and partnerships. ATTRIBUTES Maintains effective and productive relationship with the CEO and staff, mindful that the CEO has principle responsibility and authority over staff Creates partnerships within community and actively engages other leaders in the work Ensures multi-cultural leadership throughout United Way Provides for a pipeline of next-generation board leaders ADVOCATE FOR COMMUNITY The United Way Board is adept at public advocacy on behalf of community needs and solutions in education, income and health. ATTRIBUTES Understands and is adept at working in public policy arena Fosters role as backbone connecting others toward a common goal Values their own community’s role and responsibilities in the broader network Provides opportunities for citizen participation FUTURE-FOCUSED The United Way Board is committed to long-term sustainability of support for United Way’s mission.
