Overcoming Objectives
Brush up on your objective writing skills before you start writing your effective multiple-choice questions!
2
Objectives Specifically break down what students are to accomplish.
Help teachers directly see if learning has occurred.
3
Clear Objectives are VITAL
According to Pennsylvania State University (2007), making sure your objectives are phrased in a clear manner is important because: Objectives guide the content materials and the teaching methods. You can use objectives to make sure you reach your goals. Students will understand expectations. Assessments and grading is based on the objectives.
4
It’s All About the A,B,C,D’s…
The ABCD Method is a way for teachers to ensure they cover all of their bases when writing objectives. ABCD METHOD
5
A is for Audience! Who are your learners?
What learning styles do they favor? What is the best way to present content to them?
6
B is for Behavior! What should your learners be able to do?
Teachers need to be able to observe that learning has occurred.
7
C is for Condition! What needs to happen for the student to learn?
What prior knowledge is needed? What materials are needed?
8
D is for Degree! To what extent will the teacher see that learning has resulted? What level of mastery will be reached? How well do the learners need to perform the behavior? How much time do the learners have to complete this assignment?
9
A,B,C,D, What Comes Next? Once you have clearly established your audience, behaviors, conditions, and degrees of completion… It is easy to decide what types of activities and assignments will test your objectives. You have a set strategy to make sure learning can and will occur!
10
Get the Gist of it? Do you feel like you understand the ABCD method?
Let’s practice! If provided an objective, can you identify the Audience, Behavior, Condition and Degree?
11
Example: Identify the A, B, C, and D of the Objective.
Given the articles of research about Lung Transplant patients, the Intro to Pharmacy students will analyze and evaluate 5 possible medicine options for their lung transplant patient within the hour class session. Break it down. Who is my target audience? What behavior should I be able to observe? Under what conditions and to what degree will learning occur? When you have figured it out, move on to the next slides to check your work!

Answer Given the articles of research about Lung Transplant patients, the Intro to Pharmacy students will analyze and evaluate 5 possible medicine options for their lung transplant patient within the hour class session. This is the Condition! In order for the student to learn, they will need to have access to the articles of research about lung transplant patients!

Answer Given the articles of research about Lung Transplant patients, the Intro to Pharmacy students will analyze and evaluate 5 possible medicine options for their lung transplant patient within the hour class session. This is your audience! The Intro to Pharmacy students are your learners!
14
Answer Given the articles of research about Lung Transplant patients, the Intro to Pharmacy students will analyze and evaluate 5 possible medicine options for their lung transplant patient within the hour class session. This is the behavior. The teacher will be able to OBSERVE learning taking place because the learners will ANALYZE and EVALUATE the medicine options for their lung transplant patients.
15
Answer Given the articles of research about Lung Transplant patients, the Intro to Pharmacy students will analyze and evaluate 5 possible medicine options for their lung transplant patient within the hour class session. This is the degree. The students have the one hour class session to analyze and evaluate 5 medicine options!

How Did You Do? I hope you found the practice exercise helpful.
If you were able to identify the various parts of the objective comfortably, please move on to Presentation 3 which covers Bloom’s Taxonomy and encouraging higher-level thinking skills within objectives! If you feel you need more time with this material, please go back through this presentation until you are ready to move forward!
