StAIR - Division By, Kimberly Anglin
2
Division…What is it? Division is the action of separating something into equal parts
3
Why do I need to learn about division?
Division is an important skill to have. If you know how to divide, you will know how to:
4
Share something equally among friends
5
Figure out how much each item costs
6
Answer division problems in class
7
And so much more!
8
How do you divide?
9
There is more than one way to find the answer to a division problem!
Did you know… There is more than one way to find the answer to a division problem!
10
Let’s try 12 ÷ 4
11
How many cookies are in each group?
12 ÷ 4 Split 12 cookies evenly into 4 groups. How many cookies are in each group?
12
There are 3 cookies in each group.
12 ÷ 4 There are 3 cookies in each group. 12 ÷ 4 = 3
13
6 ÷ 2 Split the 6 triangles up evenly into the 2 cups
How many triangles go in each cup?
14
There are 3 triangles in each cup.
6 ÷ 2 There are 3 triangles in each cup. 6 ÷ 2 = 3
15
Now YOU Try!
16
4 ÷ 2 Split the 4 triangles up evenly into the 2 cups
How many triangles go in each cup? A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4
17
6 ÷ 3 Split the 6 triangles up evenly into the 3 cups
How many triangles go in each cup? A. 4 B. 3 C. 2 D. 6
18
8 ÷ 2 Split the 8 triangles up evenly into the 2 cups
How many triangles go in each cup? A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4
19
9 ÷ 3 Split the 9 triangles up evenly into the 3 cups
How many triangles go in each cup? A. 9 B. 3 C. 2 D. 6
20
Division and Multiplication are Opposites!
Did you know that the same three numbers that are used to multiply are used to divide? For example: 12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 4 x 3 = 12 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 3 x 4 = 12 The numbers 3, 4, and 12 are a fact family
21
Fact Family A fact family is a collection of related multiplication and division facts made from the same numbers. 6 7 42 6 x 7 = ÷ 7 = 6 7 x 6 = ÷ 6 = 7
22
Fact Families 12 ÷ 4 = x 4 = ÷ 4 = 4 x = ÷ = 4 = Fact Family: 3, 4, 12 3
23
Now YOU Try!
24
Which number belongs in the yellow box?
Fact Families 20 ÷ 5 = 6 x 5 = ÷ 5 = 6 5 x 6 = ÷ 6 = 5 = ? Which number belongs in the yellow box? A. 5 B. 4 C. 20 D.10
25
Which number belongs in the yellow box?
Fact Families 35 ÷ 7 = 6 x 7 = ÷ 7 = 6 7 x 6 = ÷ 6 = 7 = ? Which number belongs in the yellow box? A. 5 B. 7 C. 6 D.1
26
Which number belongs in the yellow box?
Fact Families 24 ÷ 2 = 6 x 2 = ÷ 2 = 6 2 x 6 = ÷ 6 = 2 = ? Which number belongs in the yellow box? A. 12 B. 4 C. 24 D. 2
27
6 ÷ 2 = 3 Oops! Try Again. There are 3 cookies in each cup.
Remember to split the triangles evenly between the cups For example, 6 ÷ 2 There are 3 cookies in each cup. 6 ÷ 2 = 3
28
Oops! Remember… A fact family is a collection of related multiplication and division facts made from the same numbers. 6 7 42 6 x 7 = ÷ 7 = 6 7 x 6 = ÷ 6 = 7
