” “Workplace Learning in EU” Technological Educational Institute of Crete (TEIoC): -ERASMUS Office (Branch of Chania) -Department of Electronics (DoE) -International Relations Office (IRO) of TEIoC -Department of Electronics (DoE) George Liodakis, Scientific Coordinator for Workplace Learning of DoE Chania, Crete, May 17, 2012

The role of Workplace based learning (WBL) in engineering education Undergraduate engineering education must be structured in order to provide: Adequate balance between theory and practice Industrial relevance Cultivation of students’ “soft skills” Global perspectives in engineering

Challenges for the preparation of global engineers: Global competence needs to become a key qualification of engineering graduates Transnational mobility for engineering students, researchers, and professional needs to become a priority There is an urgent need for research on engineering in a global context Global engineering excellence is critically dependent on a mutual commitment to partnerships, especially those that link engineering education to professional practice

ERASMUS Student Mobility for Placements: Student mobility for placements enables students at higher education institutions to spend a placement (traineeship/internship) period between 3 months and 12 months in an enterprise or organisation in another participating country. Where do placements take place? Host organisations for student placements may be enterprises, training centres, research centres and other organisations. Excluded are European Union institutions and other EU bodies including specialised agencies, organisations managing EU programmes (in order to avoid possible conflict of interests and / or double funding) and national diplomatic representations (embassy and consulate) of the home country of the student.

ERASMUS student mobility statistics for Greece

How to find a host enterprise or organisation for a placement (traineeship/internship)? No need for a pre-existent agreement between TEIoC and the host entity Through web searching: TEIoC IRO’s announcements (http://www.teicrete.gr/iro/ ) DoE’s portal for workplace learning (https://practice-elec.chania.teicrete.gr/ ) Other higher institutions sites (http://compus.uom.gr/erasmusp/ ) Other related sites (e.g., http://www.uiin.org/index/ ) Through the exploitation of personal contacts of academic staff (e.g., http://www.fh-kiel.de/index.php?id=4454&L=0, http://www.khk.be/khk04/eng/applyExchange/default.asp )
