Guidelines for style and presentation of your academic work Maintain a formal tone and style throughout your essay. Do not address your reader as ‘you’. Avoid using the word ‘I’. Do not use contracted words such as can’t, won’t and don’t; use the full words such as cannot, will not and do not. Never use abbreviations such as & and etc. Don’t use colloquialisms or slang expressions. Print your essay on white A4 paper, on one side only. Typing should be in 1.5 line spacing and 12 point typeface.
10
Guidelines for style and presentation of your academic work Leave a 4 cm margin on the left so the marker can write comments. Use one space after a full stop, not two. Use bolding, italics or another font, rather than underlining, to give emphasis. Use Serif fonts like Palatino, Times or Garamond which are more readable; avoid using Sans serif fonts like Chicago, Futura and Monaco. Ragged right justification is the most readable; that is, the left column is straight and the right edge of your typing is left unjustified. Use headers and footers, a title page and pagination to make your essay look more professional.
