Roman (old style & transitional) 2. Modern 3. Slab Serif The difference between typefaces mostly has to do with the shapes of the serifs themselves.

Modern 3. Humanist The difference between typefaces mostly has to do with the contrasting thickness of the stems.

Decorative or Display (geometric, fantasy, futuristic) 3.Blackletter (old english, swash) 4. Celtic (uncial, insular, carolingian) 5. Dingbats Serifs and Sans Serifs can be found mixed throughout these many classifications of specialty typefaces.

Images and other multimedia content used with permission. 10 Type Classification and Selection How to select the correct typefaces for projects Avoid using too many different typefaces in a single project Display Text Larger letters are easier to read Text should be quickly recognizable Use medium or bold weight sans serif fonts Body Text Use fonts that do not stray too far from traditions Avoid extremely wide or narrow fonts Keep font size range from 8 to 12 points Use regular or book weight fonts Serif fonts for print; Sans Serif fonts for web and projections
