2  Surveys that are designed using an internet hosting site  There are numerous web-based survey host sites.  Features vary from site to site, so users need to shop carefully before choosing.  Depending on the host site, surveys can contain multiple questions of varying formats.  Some surveys are only accessible at the website, while others allow you to publish the survey via e- mail.  In education, web-based surveys can be used following a lesson to determine current levels of understanding. (Review of Comparing Survey Applications, 2009)

3  Most host sites have free plans with the option to pay for upgrades.  Sample upgrade prices (lowest upgrade listed):  FluidSurveys - $14.95/month  MySurveyLab – $36.00/month  PollDaddy - $200/year ($16.67/month)  PollEverywhere - $15.00/month  QuestionPro - $15.00/month  SurveyMonkey - $19.95/month  SurveySidekick – no pricing provided  Zoomerang - $19.00/month Host sites allow you to upgrade, downgrade, and cancel subscriptions at any time with no penalties.

4  Survey host sites vary greatly in the features available, so survey designers will want to check them all to find the one that provides the desired data reports.  Data can be true/false, numeric, multiple choice, and written responses. The question/answer types allowed vary by survey site.  Sites provide reports of responses and survey details. Some sites are more user-friendly than others in the way the data is accessed and presented.  PollEverywhere.com allows survey takers to use cell phones to text their responses, making it a convenient alternative to expensive clicker systems. This site will then show response data during the lesson or presentation.

5  Surveys can be anonymous, providing a safe atmosphere for learners to leave honest comments and questions.  Teachers can review the survey responses and use that data to direct their instruction.  Survey responses can identify those students who need individualized instruction or reteaching.
