New Jersey New Jersey was founded in the 1623.
The Lenni Lenape tribe was the founders of New Jersey. By: Dominic, Nathan, and Bridgette

Colonies First People The History of New Jersey begins with the Lenni Lenape. The Lenni Lenape lived near the river European settlers called the Delaware river. The Lenni Lenape lived in villages up to people. In summer the Lenni Lenape lived by the ocean and fished with large nets.

Colonies Early settlers
Many Lenni Lenape lived in Oklahoma and Canada today. In the Early 1600’s European explorers traded with the Lenni Lenape In 1638, Swedish settlers came to North America to build a fur trading with the Lenni Lenape. They named the colony New Sweden.

New Sweden is now covered in parts of New Jersey and Delaware.
The Dutch victory did not last long The English had already landed in North America and they wanted more land. In 1664 England took over New Amsterdam.

Life in the colonies The two parts of New Jersey were set up differently (East and West Jersey). In east jersey settlers lived in towns. New Jersey first town was formed in East Jersey. In West Jersey Quakers lived on large farms spread out from each other. Colonial women used spinning wheels to spin yarn into thread

First New Jersey settlers built log homes.
They filled spaces between thee logs with mud and grass. Thin wooden shingles covered the roofs. Oiled paper covered the window openings for some light. Colonists also made their own clothes with deer skin for leather coats and pants.

Work and Trade In 1760 the Campbell family started an unusual business in Burgan. In New Jersey farming was most popular. After thee colony grew people did not have to farm to survive anymore. There were new jobs now like milling, blacksmith, and wheel makers. Speedwell ironworks was locating in Morris Town New Jersey.

The wampum made beads out of sea shells.
The Campbell made beads with machines. They used indentured savants to do their farming and dirty work

Colonies Exports New Jersey sold cattle.
New Jersey Also sold a lot of corn. Flax was a major product for exports. Wheat was a good crop. They also grew all of this.

Community and Faith Different religious groups settled in different parts of New Jersey. Quakers lived in West Jersey. William Tennent founded the log college to train ministers. They dressed plainly and worked hard every day. There were no leaders in Quaker Church. In 1726

Baptists had split off the church of England.
Church bell The first batiste church in West Jersey was built in 1690 in Salem County. Baptists had split off the church of England. They believed people shouldn’t be baptized until there an adults.

Becoming a state By The 1760’s American colonists had developed their own ways of life. Some people thought the colonies were outgrowing Great Britain’s rules. The taxes upset the colonists. They had no representatives in Britain’s government. Because of this colonists believed Britain had no rights.

Statehood New Jersey became a state on December 18,1787.
New Jersey was the 3rd state to become a state. The proclamation of set colonial borders . The Atlantic Ocean was New Jersey ‘s eastern border.

New Jersey New Jersey was named after the island of Jersey, England.
New Jersey is located in the Middle colonies. In 1770 the population of New Jersey was 117,400 people. The first people who lived there were the Lenni Lenape.

The first settlement was New Amsterdam.
The colonies founders were the Dutch traders. The colonies agriculture products were cattle, corn, flax, and wheat. The colonies' major industry was ironworks.

Glossary Quaker-a member of the religious society of friends a religious group founded in the 1600s,that prefers simple religious services and opposes war.] Minister- A church leader Flax- a slender plant with blue flowers witch is grown for it’s fiber from which linen is made and for it’s seeds. Exports- selling and sending out goods. Indentured servants- Someone who agrees to work for free for a certain length of time. Blacksmith- a person who works with iron. Shingles- The roof top material.
