A cancerous cell is caused by a faulty reproduction system. The cell continues to reproduce at a very fast rate When cells reproduce at an abnormally fast rate they create a tumor
3
There are two types of tumors Benign An abnormal mass of normal cells These cells remain at the site of reproduction Can be removed through surgery Main health concerns come from the location of the tumor, not the cells
5
Malignant A mass of cells that results from the reproduction of cancer cells. A cancer cell is one that is caused by a major disruption of the cells reproductive parts These cells can spread and take over other body parts
6
Metastasis: the spread of cancer cells beyond their original site Cells will spread through the lymph system and take over other parts where they make new tumors
7
Change in chemistry of the body Age Environment Genetics Others????
8
Removal of tumor by surgery Radiation therapy The cells are exposed to radiation to stop them from dividing Chemotherapy The patient is given drugs that disrupt cell division Some disrupt mitosis by affecting the spindle Prevents it from forming Freezes it after it’s formed
