Statewide Digitization & FCLA Digital Archive Statewide Digitization Projects Planners Conference, October 2005 Characteristics of Producers Universities are distributed throughout the state Libraries use many systems for digital content, e.g. Ex Libris DigiTool CONTENTdm Institutional repositories Universities produce content in many ways, e.g. Library digitization projects Electronic Theses and Dissertations Scholarly e-journals Departmental publishing (websites, newsletters, etc.) Producers want control of their content and its presentation Rarely possible to control or limit formats used

Bilateral Agreement with each Producer (library) specifies what will be archived by “project” and file format Producers create Submission Information Packages (SIP) in specified format Producers can request dissemination of the content they provided – “Dark Archive” has no online realtime access Shared responsibility for preservation: Producers select, describe, submit and need to know when to request FDA guarantees availability of original submission and of usable version
