Online Safety at Darien Currently Currently 90% of Darien teachers surveyed are addressing Online Safety/Digital Literacy in some way. Topics Being Addressed Internet Safety Digital Literacy Copyright/Fair Use Evaluating Web Resources 2012-2015 Technology Plan will focus on education of parents, teachers, students

Best Practices for Schools Time is spent teaching students what it means to comply with AUPs. Consequences: inadvertent violations to be considered teaching opportunities rather than automatic occasions for punishment Online consequences are consistent with offline behavior consequences Internet safety instruction is a prerequisite for school-provided Internet access. Instruction in media literacy is integrated into the curriculum at all levels as an essential dimension of scholarship and learning. Teachers are offered professional development opportunities by the school district to understand and learn how to teach the importance of media literacy on the Internet. The PTA and Parent groups continually offer programs to the community regarding online safety and guidance on maintaining open communication with children.
