THINK ABOUT THIS!  AFTER THE FALL OF ROME LIFE WAS DANGEROUS AND DIFFICULT IN EUROPE: INVADERS, POVERTY  Who were the invaders?  Why were the people of Europe in poverty?  What were the needs of the people of Europe after the fall of Rome?

CHAPTER 2 Standard 7.6.3  Understand the development of feudalism, its role in the medieval European economy, the way in which it was influenced by physical geography (the role of the manor and the growth of towns), and how feudal relationships provided the foundation of political order.  YOU WILL START TAKING NOTES ON THE NEXT SLIDE, QUESTIONS GO ON THE LEFT, BULLET POINTS ON THE RIGHT!

HOW DID FEUDALISM FILL THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE OF EUROPE?  FEUDALISM PROVIDED A STRICT SOCIAL ORDER (HIERARCHY) BASED ON RANK DETERMINED AT BIRTH. IT ALSO PROVIDED PROTECTION AND WAS SUPPORTED BY THE MANORIAL ECONOMIC SYSTEM.

FEUDALISM WAS BASED ON LOYALTY, WHAT IS THAT?  TURN TO PAGE 11 OF YOUR WORKBOOK AND DEFINE THE TERM “LOYALTY” BY DESCRIBING A SITUATION IN WHICH IT IS IMPORTANT FOR SOMEONE TO BE LOYAL.  AFTER 5 MINUTES YOU WILL SHARE WITH A PARTNER, AND 5 PEOPLE WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO SHARE WITH THE WHOLE CLASS

WHAT DOES FEUDALISM LOOK LIKE? TOP TO BOTTOM=MORE PEOPLE BOTTOM TO TOP = MORE RESPECT ENTIRE SYSTEM IS BASED ON LOYALTY AND RESPONSIBILITY. LOYALTY

HOW DID FEUDALISM BEGIN?  WARRING GROUPS (KINGDOMS) COMPETED FOR THE LANDS THAT USED TO BE ROME  POWER = LAND AND STRONG ARMIES THE FRANKS (FRANCE) HAD ARMIES OF HEAVILY ARMED KNIGHTS FIGHTING ON HORSEBACK THESE KNIGHTS HELPED TO PROTECT AGAINST OTHER BARABARIAN GROUPS AND CONQUER (GAIN) LAND.

HOW DID FEUDALISM BEGIN?  CHARLEMAGNE (CHARLES THE GREAT) USED A SYSTEM OF REWARDS- LAND FOR SERVICE UNITED ALL CHRISTIAN LANDS AND WAS NAMED HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR BY POPE LEO III IN 800 CE  HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR WAS LEADER OF ALL ROMAN CATHOLIC LANDS (ONLY THE POPE COULD APPOINT HOLY ROMAN EMPEROR)  ***This is a time that the monarchy and the papacy cooperated….this was not always how their relationship was

HOW DID FEUDALISM ESTABLISH ORDER IN EUROPE?  PEOPLE WERE BOUND TO ONE ANOTHER BY PROMISES OF LOYALTY AND RESPONSIBILITY (1000 C.E.) WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR BROUGHT FEUDALISM TO ENGLAND IN 1066  MONARCH- RULER OF ALL LANDS  LORD - NOBLES BY BIRTH  KNIGHT- ARMORED SOLDIERS  PEASANTS - POOR FARMERS PAID RENT TO A LORD SERFS- UNFREE PEASANTS THAT WERE “TIED” TO LAND, COULDN’T LEAVE. NO CHOICE BUT TO WORK LAND FOR SMALL PLOT

WHAT WAS A MANOR AND WHY WAS IT IMPORTANT?  THE MANOR WAS THE HEART OF FEUDALISM  MANORS WERE SELF-SUFFICIENT : THEY GREW AND BUILT EVERYTHING THAT THEY NEEDED THEMSELVES  ALL PEOPLE WHO LIVED ON THE MANOR HAD A ROLE WITH DIFFERENT RESPONSIBILITIES.

FEUDAL MANOR

2.4 MONARCHS DURING FEUDAL TIMES  MANY MONARCHS RELIED ON THEIR LORDS (VASSALS) TO PROVIDE KNIGHTS AND SOLDIERS AND MAINTAIN CONTROL OF KINGDOM  MOSTLY SYMBOLIC RULERS WITH LITTLE REAL POWER, BUT BELIEVED GOD GAVE THEM POWER TO RULE DIVINE RIGHT OF KINGS  WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR BROUGHT FEUDALISM TO EUROPE

2.5 LORDS AND LADIES  NOBLES; MOST LIVED ON MANORS IN MANOR HOUSES OR CASTLES  PROVIDED PROTECTION AND WERE STATUS SYMBOLS  LORDS: MANAGE AND PROTECT FIEF, SERVED AS JUDGES  LADIES: CARED FOR CHILDREN AND OVERSAW HOUSEHOLDS

2.6 KNIGHTS, NOT NIGHTS  VASSALS OF MORE POWERFUL LORDS  EXCHANGED PROTECTION FOR LAND  LOYAL TO CHURCH AND LORD  PAGE--> SQUIRE--> KNIGHT  CODE OF CHIVALRY SET OF RULES OF BEHAVIOR, RESPECT, AND HONOR

2.7 PEASANTS  FREE PEASANTS RENTED LAND TO FARM AND OWED ONLY THEIR RENT TO THE LORD.  UNFREE PEASANTS “SERFS” FARMED THE LORDS FIELDS AND COULD NOT LEAVE THE LAND RECEIVED A SMALL PLOT OF LAND TO FARM FOR THEIR OWN LORDS COULD DEMAND TALLAGE, MERCHET, AND “HEAD MONEY”
