What got Hillbrook thinking about learning spaces? 1:1 iPads @ Hillbrook, August 2010 Change in teaching Change in learning Change in space requirements Change in resource requirements
4
Goals, Mobility, Space Christina Pak, 7/8 grade history teacher: thoughts on how students are using space and relationship to mobility/iPads/laptops
5
Keep in Mind... Environment impacts behavior. Learning behaviors are changing because of technology (the student nomad...) Flexible learning spaces are being designed and installed in universities and some schools. How does the learning space space affect student engagement?
6
Goals/Overview History/Research on environment & learning Observations about mobility and learning Case study - Hillbrook/Bretford/Hero iLab project Discussion
7
Thinking About Space Tim Springer: Raising the questions (from http://edu20.bretford.com/thought-leaders)http://edu20.bretford.com/thought-leader
8
What Kind of Spaces Creative Spaces brainstorm: students and teachers gathered to talk about possible creative spaces
9
Framing the question What do we do with bricks and mortar when the classroom is in the cloud? How can learning spaces change to support new technologies and new learning? What can we do to increase agility in learning spaces?
10
Key Concepts from Research Learning is social Learning is mobile Learning is multi-modal : Not either/or; it’s both-and; cooperative, individual, guided, etc. Learning needs context Learning integrates technology
11
Conclusion - The Agile Learning Space So... Learning spaces must be agile adapt to different styles of both teaching and learning. Now and in the future easy to change to meet different needs at different times smart to accommodate technology - (power and data). engaging - encourage and enable exploration - both content and context (knowledge & space) different - non traditional. One size does not fit all

To think about If you want to be an innovative, 21st century school that maximizes the technology and the shift in teacher and learning (from sage on the stage to collaboration; from content mastery to creative thinking and problem solving work); you have to think about environment. Learning is situated. Where and with whom you learn is as important as what and how.
