1. Backup Local Email Online For secure offsite storage of your e-mail, and making it available from any computer or smart phone. Backup e-mail accessed with e-mail clients such as Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail, Thunderbird or Apple Mail. Backup to an online server that supports IMAP, which allows 2-way communication and synching, such as Gmail or AOL. Note that servers with only POP3 support communicate just one way.

Backup Outlook Express Email to GMail Summary: Step 1: Enable IMAP access in Gmail.Enable IMAP access in Gmail Step 2: Configure Gmail account in Outlook Express.Configure Gmail account in Outlook Express Step 3: Create folders in the Outlook Express Gmail account to receive mail for backup. Step 4: Move mail from other Outlook Express account to new folders in the Outlook Express Gmail account.

4. Backup Outlook Express Email to GMail Step 1: Enable IMAP access in Gmail:Enable IMAP access in Gmail In Gmail window, click gear, Settings. Under “Forwarding and POP/IMAP” tab, IMAP access heading, click “Enable IMAP”. Click “Save Changes”.

Enter your name in the “Display Name” field. Enter your full Gmail address and password, click Next, Finish

6. Backup Outlook Express Email to GMail Step 2: Configure Gmail account in Outlook Express, continued. Click Tools, Accounts, select imap.gmail.com and click Properties, Advanced tab. Under Outgoing mail, check “This server requires a secure connection (SSL) and enter “465” for the server port number. Under Incoming Mail, enter “993” for the port number. Click Servers tab and check “My server requires authentication”.

7. Backup Outlook Express Email to GMail Step 3: Create folders in Outlook Express in the Gmail account to receive mail for backup. In OE, under the imap.gmail.com account, select a folder such as “Personal”, “Work”, etc. Create a subfolder under it for the mail to be moved online by clicking File, New, Folder and naming the folder. Click imap.gmail.com, select the new folder, click Settings and select “All Messages”.

Backup Outlook Express Email to GMail Step 4: Move Outlook Express mail to folders in the Gmail account: In OE under the old account with mail to be sent to GMAIL, select the emails to be sent, e.g. using click and shift-click. Click Edit, Copy to Folder, and select the folder under the imap.gmail.com account for its destination. Note - it took me 10 minutes to send 64 messages to Gmail. It can be slow.

9. Backup Outlook Express Email to GMail Note - To reduce the impact of Gmail synch time on accessing mail with Outlook Express, click imap.gmail.com and adjust Settings to the minimum needed. The default setting for Gmail Inbox is “All Messages”, but you can change it to “New Messages Only”, “Headers Only” or “Don’t Synchronize”. After messages have been moved to Gmail, you can change their folder setting to “Don’t Synchronize”.

10. Backup Windows Mail Email to GMail InstructionsInstructions. Everything’s the same except, in initial setup of account, after entering server names, check box for “Outgoing server requires authentication” (done as a change to properties in Outlook Express).

11. Backup Online Email to GMail Import from Yahoo, Hotmail, AOL, and other Webmail or POP3 accounts In the Gmail Window, click the gear, Setting, “Accounts and Import” tab. Click “Import mail and contacts”, and enter account details. The import may take several hours, up to 2 days. Uses a version of TrueSwitch. Or use Mail Fetcher to check mail from up to 5 other accounts that have POP3 access – the 4 th option under “Accounts and Import”. Or set up your other account to forward mail to Gmail.
